US-31 BRIDGE REPAIR - AN UPDATE FROM MDOT
What is being done?
On Dec. 12, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) began a $1.9 million repair project on the US-31 bascule bridge over the Pine River channel in Charlevoix. This project will include substructure and steel repairs, as well as electrical and mechanical upgrades. The project also includes replacing the traffic warning gates and the electrical switches needed to ensure the bridge operates smoothly and properly, reconstructing the bridge roadway approaches, and painting the steel superstructure
How will traffic be affected?
For most of the work, the bridge will remain in the closed/down position, with two-way vehicle traffic maintained through traffic shifts. Some of the work will require the bridge to be locked in the up/open position for six-hour periods (11 p.m. to 5 a.m.) on 12 consecutive nights, tentatively scheduled to begin March 20, 2017. During those overnight closures, traffic will require a 67-mile detour on M-66, M-32, US-131, and US-31.
