Message from
Head of School Lisa A. Lalama

One hallmark of Wilmington Montessori School is our effort to improve our practice each and every day. In the words of blogger George Couros , "We try to do school better." Many schools and businesses pride themselves on their innovation. But what does it mean to be innovative? Why are we making the choices we are making? Why are we using technology? Why are we working to integrate the arts ? Why are we teaching in the ways we are choosing to teach?

Dr. Montessori developed a unique way of educating young children based on her power of observation. She watched children, noted their successes and their challenges, and created an environment that allowed them to move about independently and learn from the materials and experiences within it. She worked to make school better. Although so much has changed since she opened the first Montessori classroom, so much has remained the same.

At WMS we utilize those same materials and experiences that Maria Montessori developed more than 100 years ago. We use them and wonder how we can build upon her wisdom and experience. We make certain that we are knowledgeable about the best practices in each discipline and then strive to go beyond that, working to do school better. We are not satisfied with what we are doing today - not because we don't do it well, but precisely because we do. We always want to do things better.
Though we have a strong foundation of the Montessori philosophy and pedagogy, we make it our business to be informed of research that supports student learning and adapting to incorporate changes in our practice. We know that technology is an integral part of what we all need to know in order to negotiate our world. The arts open doors to each of us in various ways. What has been shown to be true is that increased experience in the arts improves student learning.

WMS prepares children for their future. None of us is certain what that future will hold. However, we know that if children know how to approach learning and have an enthusiasm for learning and understanding how the world works, they are ready to face that uncertain future. And each day we come to school, trying to do it better.

Important Reminder
Financial Aid Application Deadline - this Friday

There are only a few days remaining for current families to submit financial aid applications in order to be considered for the first round of grants.

All application materials, including 2015 tax returns, must be received and processed through the FAST system by  Friday, January 13, to be eligible for our first round of decisions.

Because funds are limited and demand is high, late filing of materials may result in non-renewal of a financial aid grant.

Financial aid grants are made for one year only, and therefore, families must reapply each school year.

For more information, please contact
Nancy Oddo, Business Manager or Tiffany Harrison, Director of Admissions.

 Tuesday, January 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Dreaming of summer? So are we!

If the cold wind is getting you down, tune in to discuss what to look for in a summer camp program and what Camp Montessori has to offer families in 2017.

This year, Camp Montessori will feature our campers' all-time favorite specialty programs including archery, three levels of coding/programming and our "Showstoppers" performing arts camp - along with the new Field Trip camp, featuring a week of day trips to local destinations.

In addition to our specialty programs, all first-grade and older campers will participate in Afternoon Electives, choosing each week from a new list of focused options such as Olympic Sports, Stream Team, LEGO, Yoga and Chemistry Wizards.

Register for our webinar to learn more, and visit wmsde.org/camp to check out our offerings and register for camp!

Enrolling WMS Siblings for the 2017-18 School Year - First Round Deadline Quickly Approaching

The admissions application is open for 2017-18 school year, and we want to ensure that current families are given priority in the admissions process.

If you wish to enroll your child's sibling at WMS, please submit an admissions application by  Friday, January 13 to be given priority in first-round decisions. New families have begun to submit their applications for 2017-18, and spaces are limited in many of our programs. We currently have a waiting list in the Toddler Program for this school year, and we anticipate that we will have one for next school year as well.

Feel free to contact Tiffany Harrison, Admissions Director, at
[email protected] if you have any questions about enrolling your child's sibling at WMS.

Child-Care Price Reduction for Parent Conferences

We recognize that the partnership between parents, teachers and administrator is essential to every child's education. We also recognize that finding child-care during meetings can be a challenge!

The cost for child-care during the time that a parent is in a conference with a teacher or administrator will now be $10 per child. This is true whether it is on a scheduled conference day, before school or after school.

This is a significant reduction from the previous drop-in cost, which was $25.  We hope that this will help parents and teachers to schedule conferences at times that work for all concerned!

Learning Together -
Limited Spaces Available for Winter Session

Learning Together is so much more than a playgroup or parenting class!

Based on the Montessori philosophy of "following the child," Learning Together is a program in which young children ages 9 months to 36 months are free to learn, explore and interact with others in a classroom especially designed for them, alongside adult partners like parents, grandparents, guardians and other consistent caregivers.

Registration for the Winter Session of Learning Together is open. The Saturday session will run from January 28 - March 18 (No class on February 18) and the Wednesday class has reached capacity. Register online to secure your space.
