Principal's message:

Happy Sunday evening! I hope you get the chance to see your students in action sometime over the next few weeks. With the many things we have going on, both curricular and extra-curricular, there should be a chance to find out and experience Deal for yourself. I raise this point because during the most recent Deal Visit (where incoming families meet with me and get a tour of Deal), a potential parent asked what were words of advice I could give him about his middle school child. While there was more in my answer than this, I have always felt strongly that parents should be present when their children are being showcased, are performing, or when they are just being involved. I hope we give our families enough opportunities for this over the school year.

We have a few times when we get almost everyone to Deal. These are 6th grade orientation (remember that?), Back-to-School Night, and Parent-Teacher Conference Days. The characteristic that I think these share is that there is a certain amount of mystery between the school and family and these events are designed to make transparent what is happening. These are high-stakes events; parents feel that they really must come to these to be considered invested in their child's development and to get information in the most direct method possible. Curious about the principal? Hear him for an hour! What about those teachers? Let's check them out in their rooms one evening. How do I understand my child's progress? Let's talk about it with each of their teachers.

So what else is the caring, concerned parent to do? I am obviously a huge booster of our ADCA as you should be. We are so lucky to have the right group of people working together with us. For years, the ADCA has been a steady, consistent support for Deal. You should have joined up by now, no question about that. But beyond the financial (and perhaps time) support of the ADCA, we also need to have you here at school.

If your child is in a sport or an activity that has a performance component to it, I sincerely hope you can see her or him as many times in the year as they are performing. Sorry for the pressure, folks, but they need you to see them do their work! While it is always good to see the whole event, sometimes that is tough in this busy world; if you are there for some part of it that makes a difference as well. I can't tell you how many games I have been at where one of our Vikings is searching the stands for a friend, teacher, parent, family member. When a student takes the time to practice and do their very best, they want you to know how competent they are, how dedicated they are, how much motivation they can show.

This even works for teachers as well, and they know this. Students love, love, love having their teachers in the stands, in the seats, on the sidelines watching them. So many teachers go to games and cheer crazily for all the athletes - and then talk to them about it for the next three days. This is how we build relationships, and even though teachers are finished (theoretically!) at 3:30, many often show up to cheer on kids at 6:30.

The other big area where it makes a big difference that you show up is helping out for the Science Fair (see below), National History Day (soon), and other volunteer opportunities. Don't listen to what your student says - they are glad that you are there! School matters to you, it matters to them. Go on a field trip, you will get to meet their classmates and learn something as well. The more we are physically together around school, the more we can connect.

Take care, and keep in touch.

James Albright ( james.albright@dc.gov)

NB. This week we have a visit from the staff at Ron Brown High School, the DCPS boys' school that is finishing up its first year of serving students. Three of their freshmen are Deal graduates, so if your son is interested, please encourage them to sign up for the visit. The high school staff weren't able to be here on High School Night, so this is the first chance to hear from their team.

Trip Scholarships
Each year, Deal provides a limited number of partial scholarships for world language trips to eligible students. These scholarships are made possible by the support of the ADCA, individual family contributions, DCPS, and EF Tours.

Families who do not qualify for federal support but are still interested in support at some level should contact Assistant Principal Rottman at patrick.rottman@dc.gov or Principal Albright at james.albright@dc.gov. Families have been supported with up to $500 in years past (though this has varied based on the total amount available).

Because scholarship funding comes from a variety of sources, eligible families should not anticipate the funding to come up front; support is funded very close to the actual trip.

Please direct enrollment questions to the trip leader for your student; direct scholarship questions to Mr. Rottman or Mr. Albright.

Have you lost something during the school day? Check out the lost and found section of the website ( http://alicedeal.org/lost-found/) for photos of items found in common areas at Deal, including in the cafeteria, field, and gallery. Lost items will be kept for approximately two weeks before they are donated. To claim an item, please ask a staff member in the cafeteria to guide you to the lost-and-found.

We make an effort to identify labeled items and make announcements for students to pick these up in the Welcome Center. Please help us by putting your full name on all lunch boxes, back-packs, and other items you bring to school on a regular basis.

Don't see what you've lost? Most classrooms have individual lost-and-found areas. Consider checking in with your teachers. You can also stop by the lost-and- found in the cafeteria as not all items may be pictured.

Executive Skills Supports
Some common issue facing many 7th Graders can be described as students being disorganized, forgetful, distracted, or careless. According to Peg Dawson and Richard Guare in their article "Executive Skills: The Hidden Curriculum," students who demonstrate these behaviors lack executive skills: the ability to get organized, execute tasks, and take an idea from start to finish. Dawson and Guare describe the following executive skills as essential to student success in school and life:
  • Response Inhibition - thinking before acting;
  • Working Memory - holding information in mind while performing complex tasks;
  • Emotional Control - managing emotions to     complete tasks or control behavior;
  • Sustained Attention - staying focused despite   distractions, boredom, or fatigue;
  • Task Initiation - beginning tasks without undue procrastination;
  • Planning and Prioritization - creating a roadmap to reach a goal and making decisions about what's important;
  • Organization - creating and maintaining systems to keep track of information or materials;
  • Time Management - estimating how much time one has, what's important, how to allocate time, and how to meet deadlines;
  • Goal-directed persistence - having a goal, following through to completion, and not getting sidetracked;
  • Adaptability - being able to revise plans in the face of obstacles, setbacks, new information, or mistakes;
  • Metacognition - being able to step back and ask, "How am I doing?"
Throughout adolescence these skills develop slowly and unevenly. However, the middle school years mark a key developmental stage to support your children with the development of these skills. If you notice that your child is struggling in one of these areas of Executive Skill, please consider some of the following suggestions to support their development at home.
  • Structure, Routines and Organizational Schemes: Making tasks shorter; making the steps more explicit; building in variety and choice; and providing more prompts, reminders, and supervision.
  • Goal Setting: If you notice an Executive Skill weakness, set a goal with your child and develop steps to support them meeting the goal. Monitor their progress and provide them with feedback and encouragement.
  • Praise/Incentives: Provide your child with specific praise or incentives for meeting goals and demonstrating growth in a targeted skill.

New: Common Application
The Common Application for specialized DCPS High Schools opened on December 12th. The deadline for the application is February 1st.  The Common Application is used to apply to all DCPS Selective High Schools. These schools are Benjamin Banneker, School Without Walls, McKinley Technology, Phelps ACE, Columbia Heights Education Campus, and Duke Ellington School of the Arts.

High School Applications
Eighth grade students applying to high schools will likely need transcripts and letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, and admin at Deal. Here are a few tips to ensure the process goes smoothly for students and staff:

Requesting a Transcript
Many applications will ask for a transcript or school records. Requests should be sent to Ms. Humphrey ( Eunice.Humphrey@dc.gov) in writing at least two weeks prior to the submission deadline. If your student applies to

Requesting Recommendations
Who - Start by thinking about the best teachers to attest to your strengths and positive attributes. Some schools require specific subject teachers to write the recommendation; be aware of this before you ask.

Prepare - Gather all recommendation forms and fill out all pertinent information. Prepare an addressed and stamped envelope for each requested recommendation for. All recommendations will be placed in the mail by the individual teacher or by your counselor.

Ask - Ask the individual if they would be willing to write your recommendation. Tell them when it needs to be completed and mailed in. It is also a good practice to send a follow-up email to the teacher thanking them for taking the time to do this for you. This email will help you keep track of who is submitting recommendations for you and also help with follow-up.

Grow - Use the experience of asking for a letter of recommendation to help you grow your communication skills.  This will come in handy when advocating for yourself in high school.
