Putting Horse Ranch FAM Tour

A.V.I.P. Conference (Alberta Visitor Information Providers) was hosted in the tri region September 26 - 28; the Spruce Grove & District Chamber of Commerce partnered with Tri Region Tourism to host over 100 delegates from all over the province. The chamber facilitated a FAM (Familiarization Tour) for a pre-conference activity on the Monday. Dick Baker navigated the bus, as our driver. Mayor Houston welcomed our guests for the first leg of the tour from Holiday Inn Express & Suites to the Perks Coffee House Double Decker Bus. Bernie Rousseau, retired from Alberta Honey Producers, came out of retirement to give the group an executive summary of the history of Bee Maid Honey. Our guests were delighted with a walking tour of downtown Stony Plain and a bit of time to shop, as well as a site visit to the Heritage Pavilion expansion. The day ended with a meal and assorted activities at Putting Horse Ranch.
The conference presentations were hosted at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites with the AMMY Award Presentation on the Tuesday evening. The tri municipal region was well represented with Mayor Stuart Houston (City), Mayor Rod Shaigec (County) and Councillor Dwight Ganske (Town). The Spruce Grove & District Chamber of Commerce Chair Rosetta Taylor, as well as Alderman Kesanko and Alderman Turton also attended the awards event.

Energy East hearings in Montreal face newfound scrutiny
After protests and a conflict-of-interest controversy, the pipeline hearings face a higher degree of examination
The sight of well-meaning but naïve, ill-informed and self-righteous protestors disrupting the NEB's Energy East hearings in Montreal in late August - the plaid-clad man who looked like John Goodman, the shocked look on Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre's face - was so disheartening. It was disheartening not only for those who make a living in the oil and gas industry, but for anyone who wants a reasoned discussion on climate change and the things that should be done to mitigate it. Stopping Energy East - or any other pipeline - will not slow climate change. Consumers around the world demand 95 million barrels of petroleum and other liquid fuels per day, and that demand is on the way up, not down. Read more

Canadian workers can forget getting a raise next year,
says new poll
Don't expect a raise from your boss next year, says a new survey from Aon Hewitt.
The human resources firm polled 347 Canadian companies about their salary intentions for 2016 and 2017. It found that variable pay is expected to average 15.4 per cent of payroll in 2017 - unchanged from this year.
Flat salaries are the result of economic uncertainty, says Aon Hewitt, as Corporate Canada continues to grapple with the crash in oil prices and a deteriorating labour market.
"The Canadian companies we surveyed are clearly reluctant to earmark higher compensation increases as they prepare for a highly competitive landscape in 2017," said Suzanne Thomson, senior consultant of global data solutions for Aon Hewitt.
