Impact Preconference Finalized
|
The Impact After School Conference pre-conference on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, will feature a poverty simulation.
The poverty simulation experience is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family trying to survive from month to month. Participants assume the roles of different families facing poverty. Some are newly unemployed, some are elderly, some are recently deserted by the "breadwinner." The task of all the "families" is to provide for basic necessities and shelter during the course of four 15-minute weeks.
Registration is not yet open for Impact 2018. Please check www.iowaafterschoolalliance.org for updates as they come available!

IAA Joins Iowa Rural Development Council
|
The Iowa Afterschool Alliance has been invited to be a member of the Iowa Rural Development Council. Since 1992, the Iowa Rural Development Council (IRDC) has been engaging partners and assisting small towns. The IRDC was created as part of an Executive Order and ensuing Farm Bill in 1992. It received federal funding for many years and was later housed in the Iowa Department of Economic Development. But both state and federal funding dissolved and the group has operated informally without paid staff since 2005.
In 2016, the IRDC hosted the first-ever Iowa Rural Summit, bringing together 300 individuals from more than 60 rural communities. That event sparked a resurgence in interest among rural advocates and convinced IRDC partners, who include federal and state agencies, Regents' institutions and community colleges, utilities, non-profits and statewide associations, to revitalize the Council's ability to support rural development. The IRDC will again host the Iowa Rural Summit April 5 & 6, 2018, in Grinnell.
"This is an organization that has impacted rural Iowa for a quarter century and is positioned now to do more," said IRDC chair Sandy Ehrig, who runs the Iowa Farm Bureau's "Renew Rural Iowa" program. "Our rural summit in Jefferson last year was a big step and the Council is ready to build on that momentum."
The IAA expects to bring a perspective to the Council unique among members that recognizes the importance of youth programs to rural communities across the state. The IAA will provide regular updates regarding the work of the IRDC and outreach to rural communities.
