ANNUAL MEETING:
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
The LMLC Annual Meeting is Sunday, January 29th, immediately following worship.  In addition to electing Council members and agency representatives, we will eat lunch together and hear updates about the ministries at Luther Memorial!  Our theme this year is "There's No Place Like Home", and is based around the Wizard of Oz movie!  So, bring your favorite food that reminds you of home for the potluck and be prepared to follow the yellow brick road to our Annual Meeting!

INTRODUCTION TO WELLNESS & YOGA
As a gift to the congregation, neighborhood, and community, Luther Memorial and MSW Yoga are offering three free Introduction to Wellness & Yoga classes during the month of January:
Tuesday, January 17 at 6:15pm Sunday, January 22 at 4:00pm
Tuesday, January 31 at 6:15pm

SUNDAY OFFICE HOURS
During the month of January, Katy Sarff will keep Sunday office hours on January 15th and January 29.  She will be available before and after worship to tend to any office related matters you may need.
Council has asked Katy to designate at least 2 Sundays per month for Sunday office hours.  Other Sundays when Katy is in worship, she is there as a member and office related matters should be handled during the week.
We will make every effort to publicize the Sunday Office Hours.

A MUSICAL GIFT!
With gratitude we accept from the family of Dorothy and Warren Smith the piano that graced their home for many years. When Dorothy's medical condition became such that she could not attend worship, they would worship together at home, using the texts assigned for the day and singing their favorite hymns. Upon their deaths, the Smith's daughters gifted the piano to LMLC and it is now in the Fireside Room. We look forward to utilizing this piano in a variety of ways. A note to parents and guardians in the congregation: We love our children and want to encourage their love of music. Please encourage your young ones to play the pianos in the building with one or two fingers. "Banging" on them puts them out of tune easily and is not good for the instrument.

From Pastor Julie -
Beloved Community,

On Monday the Church commemorates the life, ministry, and mission of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.   His work for equality in our country was soundly rooted in the Gospel and in his understanding of Jesus' teachings.

Where is our work grounded?  How does what we believe inform the way we are in the world?  How does following Jesus affect our parenting, our friendships, our vocations, and our work for justice?

We celebrate and remember the work of the saints because they inspire us as models of faith.  While we might imagine, here in our Seattle "bubble" that the civil rights work for racial equality Dr. King championed is largely done, I can assure you that it is not.  There are areas of our country where racism is alive and well to a degree we have a hard time imagining.  Recently a high school classmate of mine sent me a private message through Facebook.  She told me that I am the ONLY white person she has ever known to publicly speak out against racism.

In Jesus name and for the sake of the world he loves, there is much work to do.  Let us continue to show love for all people.  Let us work for the good of everyone.  Let us respect the dignity of each person.  And may justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an every flowing stream.

See you in church,
Pastor Julie+

Sunday's Scripture Readings:
First Reading
Isaiah 49:1-7
Here the servant Israel speaks for herself and acknowledges herself as God's secret weapon. Called before her birth like Jeremiah and John the Baptist, the servant is not only to restore Israel itself. The servant's ultimate assignment is to bring news of God's victory to the ends of the earth. God in faithfulness has chosen Israel for this task.

Second Reading
1 Corinthians 1:1-9
Though God's church in Corinth is a fractious congregation beset with many conflicts, Paul opens this letter by spotlighting the multiple ways God has enriched and sustained its life as part of the divine call into the fellowship of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospe l
John 1:29-42
John the Baptist's witness to Jesus initiates a chain of testimony as his disciples begin to share with others what they have found.
