Seminar series focuses on water for the right use at the right time
|
The Nebraska Water Center and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's School of Natural Resources will co-host a seminar series exploring topics related to water and natural resources. This year's theme is "The right water for the right use at the right time." Lectures will take place Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. CST at Hardin Hall on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's East Campus on the following dates: Jan. 18, Feb. 1 and 15, March 1 and 15, and April 5 and 19.
For those who cannot attend, lecture videos and speaker PowerPoint presentations will be available online following each event.

2017 WARI scholarship opportunities
|
The Water Advanced Research and Innovation (WARI) Fellowship Program will award five University of Nebraska-Lincoln students with scholarships to India in 2017, where they will have the opportunity to conduct research at top-level Indian institutions. Please help spread the word to graduate students who may be interested. The application deadline is March 17. Learn more.

Project aims to boost global wheat yields
|
A University of Nebraska-Lincoln research team has earned a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to develop higher-yielding lines of hybrid wheat that can meet rising demand for the staple food crop.
DWFI Faculty Fellow Stephen Baenziger (pictured), a University of Nebraska agronomist and wheat breeder, will lead the project in conjunction with colleagues from Texas A&M University, Kansas State University and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). Awarded by the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the grant represents part of a U.S. contribution to the International Wheat Yield Partnership.

2017 World Water Week | Call for engagement

The Stockholm International Water Institute is accepting abstracts and event submissions from experts and actors of all disciplines who wish to present their work and research during 2017 World Water Week in Stockholm. This year's event will focus on "Water and Waste - Reduce and Reuse."
The submission deadline is Jan. 22.

Editorial: Nebraska aids in combating global water crisis
|
The Omaha World Herald published an editorial in response to a recent study on maximizing grain yields to help meet Africa's needs by University of Nebraska researchers. The
findings were published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The article highlights Nebraska's potential to help close the yield gap, as a "global leader not only in agriculture but also in wise long-term approaches to water."

Alivia Michalski is pursuing a bachelor's degree in environmental studies with a minor in communication studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She is currently gathering information for DWFI on groundwater regulations enforcement throughout the High Plains region and beyond.
Michalski, a native of Lincoln, Nebraska, enjoys spending most of her time outside and feels practicing sustainability is important in order to share this enjoyment with future generations. She hopes to attain a career in which she can spread an understanding of the planet's fragility and the sense of urgency that comes with protecting it.
