The winter issue of Independent School, the NAIS magazine, features articles about the Humanities: "Beyond Utility," "Teaching Significance," "Literature in the Age of Google" among others. One of the articles ends with the comment that students could use a good dose of the humanities given the divisiveness our country is experiencing, providing them "the ability to listen carefully to others, the willingness to embrace new perspectives, an appreciation of pluralism, and a commitment to social justice" ("The Crisis in the Humanities: A Self-Inflicted Wound?" Mike Kalin).
It reminded me of our rich Jesuit tradition in the humanities, a tradition that takes us further than being a good citizen. I reread Fr. John O'Malley's "Jesuit Schools and the Humanities" (Studies in the Spirituality of Jesuits 47/1 Spring 2015). He writes, "The quintessence of the Spiritual Exercises is, to use an old-fashioned expression, the development of the inner-directed person, a human being who acts not from superficial conformity to ethical standards but out of a sincere, heartfelt, and discerning appropriation of them. In other words, like the humanistic educational program, the Exercises wants to produce a certain kind of person."
Our schools do that well. Thank you!
