Sermon on the Mount~ Matthew 5-7
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them... Matthew 5:1
Dear Friends~
This week we open the sermon and listen to what Jesus said to his closest followers. Jesus spoke the Sermon on the Mount to those who were already his disciples, citizens of God's kingdom and children of God's family. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus presented a whole new vision of life- a Kingdom Culture. He let every person know there was another way, a better way than the complicated rules and regulations of the scribes and Pharisees. In this sermon we will discover a new way to find a restored relationship with God. It was revolutionary then, and it is just as amazing and radical today.
The Sermon on the Mount is probably the best-known, most celebrated, but least understood teachings of Jesus. It is challenging, and yet, refreshing. We, as followers, all are called to live differently from the world around us; and, at the same time, in the world. As citizens of the Kingdom, we represent the King. That means our conduct, our character, and our heart should be different. I believe that Jesus meant his Sermon on the Mount to be obeyed- rather than as a message to simply stimulate the mind. It is more than rules or a codebook- but rather it describes the life of a disciple- one who follows and one who is growing in grace- a life that flourishes and filled with justice, wisdom and courage.
Join us (and invite a friend!) as we open up this message of LIFE- and as we continue to be challenged to LIVE and LOVE and SERVE as Jesus did so that all may know him. Here is the plan:
January 15: Blessed! (Mt 5.3-11)
January 22: Be the Salt & Light! (Mt 5.13-14)
January 29: Risky Love- Expecting the Impossible! (Mt 5.17-48)
February 5: Just do it! (Mt 6.1-18)
February 12: The TRUTH about Treasures (Mt 6.19-24)
February 19: No Worry! (Mt 6.25-34)
February 26: Choices- Now what? (Mt 7.21-29)
See you in Church ~Pastor Linda
