The Siena Scribe

January 10, 2017
In this issue of the Scirbe:
Dear Parents,

The unexpected long weekend gave me some extra time to catch up on a few things.  While tidying several stacks of paper in my office, I came across a collection of feast day cards which some students had made for me a month ago but which I had missed reading.  It was a treat to have plenty of time to enjoy the children's very candid messages and creative drawings.

One student shared her favorite scriptural quotes with me:
  • "If God is for us who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31)
  • "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13)
  • "The Lord is greater than the giants you face." (1 John 4:4)

Others gave me some very helpful pieces of advice - here are a few of my favorites:
  • "Thank you for being a kind and generous principal.  You should take a day off!  Not that I don't like you, but just so you could relax."
  •  "Two wishes for you: wish one is MORE SLEEP, wish two is everyone to be safe"
  • "Sometimes times are hard but God will always get you through them."

I share these musings with you because I want to tell you again - as I hope I have been telling you from time to time - what a joy it is to serve your children every day.  I suppose, just as parents can be partial to their children, so a principal can be partial to her students: I think we have some very wonderful young people at our school.  And, I would like to believe that the goodness of our children reflects a unique blessing that we have here at St. Catherine's, namely, that you, our parents, and our teachers are able to see and treat each child as a child of God, created in the image of our Father in Heaven - a good, good Father who is very much in love with His children.

I pray that as we journey into the second half of this school year, we will continue to treasure our school community and work tirelessly to help our children to be their best.

With grateful prayers,
Sister Mary Jacinta, O.P.
Principal

We are pleased to announce that we are able to continue to offer a Robotics Program to our students in the 2nd through 5th grade.  Please see the Terrific Scientific Atlanta Flyer for more information and registration.  Please note that the flyer advertises several programs, but only the "Robotics" program will be offered at St. Catherine's at this time.  The flyer includes a link to the website for online registration (under the tab "Locations" - "After School Locations").  Our students in the 2nd through 5th grade will attend a brief presentation on Robotics next Wednesday at 8:00 (2nd and 3rd grade) and 8:30 (4th and 5th grade) - parents are welcome to join us at the presentation to learn more about this Robotics program.
fooddrive8th Grade Catholic School Food Drive

We have a special message from our 8th grade students, Gracen Bohling and Macie Sacristan:
"Are you aware that 14.5% of families in America experience food shortage? Last year, when the middle school students wrote on the topic of hunger in America, we learned that this is a widespread problem that is affecting families all over our country. The 8th graders have come up with a food plan, and we hope that our whole school will help! We believe that, instead of sitting back and watching or writing about hunger, we should actually do something about it. In order to make a difference and raise awareness about this issue, we are going to conduct a food drive and we would like the whole SCS community to participate. Starting on January 17, we will begin to collect canned food donations. Our goal is to collect 500 cans of food by January 31.  If we meet our goal, we will celebrate with an out-of-uniform day.   Read this flyer for more information. (a copy of the flyer will be sent home next week) Thank you!

Bring your blanket and lawn chairs and join us and your SCS friends for a fun family movie night in the school gym.  Event will be held on Friday, January 20th.  Doors will open at 5:30 PM.  Disney Pixar Movie "Finding Dory" starts at 6:00 PM sharp.  Children are welcome to wear pajamas and bring a pillow and blanket.  Free admission, popcorn, lemonade and cookies.  We look forward to seeing you at our SCS Family Movie Night!  Invitation will follow by Evite.
    ParentParent-Teacher Conferences

Optional parent-teacher conferences will take place on Friday, January 13 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.  This set of conferences is scheduled by teachers - teachers will contact parents whom they discern will benefit from a conference to discuss their children's progress at this time; not all students are in need of a conference.  However, parents who would like to meet with their children's teachers are always welcome to contact the teachers to schedule a conference.
    2nd Quarter Report Cards

ReportSince 2nd quarter report cards (1st through 8th grade) will be issued after the conferences on Tuesday, January 17, we will ensure 2nd quarter grades will remain visible on Plus Portal from now through January 13 so that students and parents will have the most up-to-date information when preparing for the conferences.
    internationalInternational Night

Our International Night is tentatively scheduled for February 28 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.  It is an evening of celebration of the many different cultures which make up our SCS community.  Families gather to display various artifacts and share food from their cultural heritage.  So far, four families have signed up to host a booth.  We would like to have at least ten booths for the event.    Please see the flyer and RSVP to Mrs. Cowan at [email protected] if you are able to host a booth  - the deadline for signing up to host a booth is Friday, February 3. Thank you! .
