Initiative to Educate Afghan Women: Meet Balqees Sayed

Balqees Sayed is an international student from Afghanistan who has just begun her studies in Psychology at Russell Sage College. She is one of three students currently at Sage through our partnership with the Initiative to Educate Afghan Women.

Balqees' interest in Psychology was sparked a few years ago back in Afghanistan when, at the age of 16, she was asked to serve as a translator to assist a psychologist and military advisor when speaking with the principal of the local high school.  At that moment she realized that she was fluent in English and she also discovered a new passion and future career.

Since arriving at Sage, Balqees has found all of the people on campus to be very helpful and supportive. She was surprised by how quickly she was able to make friends. Despite their cultural differences, she says that she feels as if she has known them for years.

Balqees is thoroughly enjoying all of her classes, and especially recommends that any Sage student take HST 221 Modern Middle East for two important reasons: 1) Dr. Leibo is a great professor, and 2) the course provides students with a wide range of information about the Middle East that is relevant to all of our lives today.

The Russell Sage community is truly fortunate to have such an intelligent and engaging student on our campus, in our classrooms and residence halls.
What If You Could Help
End Relationship Violence?

On May 3rd, 2010, Yeardley Love, who was then a senior lacrosse player at the University of Virginia and three weeks shy of her graduation, was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend.

It is the goal of the One Love Foundation to honor Yeardley Love by bringing an end to relationship violence by educating, empowering and activating campus communities in a movement for change.

One Love's Escalation Workshop is educating, empowering, and activating thousands of young people across the country through its powerful film and student-led discussion.

Escalation workshops were held at Sage last year, and faculty have asked that we run these workshops again for our first year students on both the Albany and Troy campuses: Wednesday, November 2, 11 am-12:20 pm in Troy, in Bush Memorial for Sage Seminar, and Wednesday, November 9 6-7:30, pm in Albany, in the Armory for ITD 155 first year experience.

Students/Staff: If you are interested in holding a workshop or becoming trained to facilitate Escalation, please contact Amanda Bastiani at  bastia@sage.edu  or  518-292-1710 . Virtual training options are available - new this year!

Coming Up in Student Life

The Theatre Institute at Sage Presents

Alice In Wonderland

Directed by Michael Musial
Nov. 30-Dec. 15

Lewis Carroll's unflappable young heroine takes a tumble down an enchanted rabbit hole to an off-kilter world of mock turtles, dancing flora, punctual rabbits, and mad tea parties. Whimsy and wordplay are the order of the day in this imaginative musical adaptation of a family favorite!
