Personalized Learning at South View
At South View and throughout Edina Public Schools we are focused on personalizing the learning experience for our students. As a staff, we have made a focused effort to build our capacity around Personalized Learning. Below are some of the capacity building opportunities our South View staff have accessed:
1. Site Visits:
South View staff members have had the chance to visit Pioneer Ridge Middle School in Chaska, Grandview Middle School in Mound, Farmington High School, and Cumberland High School in Rhode Island. These visits have been a great way to see Personalized Learning in action and connect and collaborate with our colleagues in neighboring districts.
2. iNACOL Conference:
A team of South View teachers had a chance to attend the 3 day iNACOL conference. The conference included presentations from educators around the country and was a fantastic chance to learn and gather resources.
3. Leading Personalized Learning Series with Jim Rickabaugh
A team of South View teachers had a chance to attend a 4 part series that was lead by Personalized Learning expert Jim Rickabaugh. Staff that attended learned from Jim as well as connected with colleagues from Chaska/Chanhassen, Farmington, Mound Westonka and Eden Prairie.
Throughout the rest of this school year and beyond, there will be more capacity building opportunities for staff as we strive to personalize the learning experience for students and meet the needs of all learners.
Community Engagement: Race and Equity
Parents and community members have the opportunity to participate in our commitment to advance our race and equity conversations into the community. This is another effort to help our community engage as a community about community. The first gathering is set for January 23 in the Normandale Auditorium.
Here is the webpage, which includes the following highlights:
"A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota," is a collection edited by local author Sun Yung Shin of 16 essays by diverse Minnesota writers. It will be the subject of three of the sessions. Each will feature a panel of essay writers, with an opportunity for facilitated discussion reflecting on their stories and how they impact the Edina community. These sessions will take place from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Before School DROP OFF REMINDERS
If you drop off at South View, remember, students may be dropped off by parents on the West side of South View at Doors 6 & 7. Parents/Guardians... please
DO NOT
drop your child off at Doors
1, 8 & 9
on the North side or Doors
3 & 4
on the South side of South View Middle School during the very busy bus traffic times of 7:20-7:40 a.m. and 2:15-2:50 p.m. Door 8 is handicap drop off only. We want to ensure all of our students are safe and the very congested bus traffic with parent drop off traffic can create very hectic, unsafe conditions.
After School Pick Up REMINDERS
It is COLD outside! As a result, we are finding that cars are parking on the left side of the road leading out of the school because they don't want to wait in the back of the line. It creates a narrow exit lane and huge bottle neck. Kids are running across the road to get to their cars and it's difficult for those that are on the right side to get out. It is dangerous.

Keep Kids Warm This Winter - Give Target or Costco Gift Cards
At this time of year and throughout the winter, teachers and school support staff become aware of students with basic needs for a warm winter coat, pair of boots or gloves, or another basic clothing item. And while we would love to accept donations of these items, storage space (as well as being intentional and efficient about size, gender and specifics for an individual) is extremely limited and having items of the appropriate size, gender, or color on hand would be difficult.
However, gift cards from Target or Costco are easy to store, and we can guarantee we'll find something that fits these students!
Here's what we're asking and here's how it will work: Please drop off gift cards ($25 amounts work well, but we will accept any amount) at the front desk at South View. They will make sure this gets to the Student Services office, where we will keep these secure and release to teachers (or other support staff) to purchase these items for students when needs arise.
Happy Holidays, and thank you for considering contributing to keep kids warm this winter.
