Upgrade Spectacular

We spent nearly two and a half years upgrading a customer's system with all PranaWire cabling, Linebacker In-line Passive Power filters and other improvements including Steve McCormack's fabulous SMC VRE-1C preamplifier and custom amplifiers, multiple sets of fo.Q  HEM-25 footers, Oyaide in wall wiring, Acrolink Mexcel digital and clock cables and proper calibration of the speakers and sub. This was an extraordinary opportunity to pull out all of the stops.  The result is a system that occupies extremely rare territory.


 
It responds to input like a feather to a puff of air. It is beyond effortless. Each musician is a vivid moving and breathing sculpture on a highly defined stage. Pizzicatos materialize from absolute blackness like fireworks bursting in space. Orchestral crescendos fill the venue with ever mutable clusters of emerging chords, the location and shape of each instrument precisely defined within the aggregate.  The moving arc of Ruth Ann Swenson's voice is like three dimensional light, projecting and receding, blooming and decaying in unique shapes and directions, phrase by phrase in real time and space. Rolf Smedvig's exquisite e mbouchure is a visible element in the Haydn Trumpet Concerto, hi s tone ethereal, floating and exquisitely transparent. Many exalted systems I have heard do not begin to exhibit these qualities. The excellent Wilson Alexias and Subwoofer shine in the context of all of these upgrades. The room is small and the speakers are confined to a less than ideal position, still...
 
When you first listen your whole being enters an involuntary state of deep relaxation. Each piece elicits wonderment. It is as though your nervous system has had a reset, returning you to the time when music itself was new and nothing but pure joy.

What an honor and privilege to have the trust and confidence of a customer who was both willing and able to follow through on all of our recommendations! I had never before had the opportunity to take a system this far. 

I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of truly memorable high end experiences I have had, but no system I have ever heard has had the combination musicality, delicacy, effortlessness and ability to induce joy in the listener as this one. The only element lacking is scale. Confined to a small room, with the speakers placed on either side of a fireplace close to the front wall, producing a prodigious sound stage was never in the cards. The customer eschews high volumes and listens for delicacy and phrasing. He has exquisite taste in music.

"Daria successfully reinvents 10 Lennon-McCartney standards 
for the jazz idiom..."
"When I'm Sixty-Four." The arrangement uses chords that pull the melody in unexpected directions, while Daria's phrasing (on this song and throughout the album) is marked by unusual hesitations that give a new perspective to the lyrics. When she purrs, "You can knit a sweater by the fireside," she makes it sound like a sensual delight. "Come Together" gets a samba accent, with subtle percussion and Wes Montgomery-like guitar fills supporting a vocal that slips and slides up and down the singer's impressive range..The stand out track is "Bird Medley," Bevan's minimal acoustic bass introduces Daria's poignant vocal as she slides up to a near falsetto that intensifies the longing ache at the heart of the song. Her scatted vocal embroiders the melody of "Icarus." Jonathan Alford comes in to take a mellow solo on the Fender Rhodes before gliding into straightforward rendition of "Bye-Bye Blackbird." And the arrangement closes with the band and Daria interposing the melodies of "Blackbird" and "Bye-Bye Blackbird."
