Triangle Speech Services is the private, professional practice of Judith L. Bergman, a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) who specializes in foreign accent and regional dialect modification and related communication skills. I offer customized, individual tutorials to corporate-sponsored and self-enrolled individuals who speak English fluently but with moderate to severe accents that create challenges and frustrations in the workplace.
I have recently started  "Legacy Coaching" with a few of my speech pathologist colleagues from all over the United States and Canada to begin to pass on my proprietary materials and methods, while still continuing with individual accent modification instruction with a few clients.
The first thing I say to a professional colleague is, "We are not working with accents!  We are working with people who have accents."   Accordingly, the three topic headers on the Newsletter Archives page of trianglespeech.com are Information, Inspiration, and Encouragement. The newsletters are about resilience, developing muscle memory, the power of practice, the advantages of being bilingual, persistence and similar informative and motivational topics.

Keep Going: The Art of Perseverance

This is the title of a little book by Joseph M. Marshall III who was born on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota and raised by his maternal grandparents. He is now an educator, historian and motivational speaker.  In stories reflecting his own life and its sorrows and challenges, he shares the wisdom of his grandfather. Here are some quotes from this book:
"Life can give you strength. Strength can come from facing the storms of life, from knowing loss...The storm...is not trying to knock you down. It is trying to teach you to be strong." (Prologue)
"Life gives and life takes...Survival is victory because we know...that it is possible." (pg. 50)
" There is nothing you can do to change yesterday, but you might make tomorrow easier by living the best you can today...Your friends will be with you every step of the way." (pg. 96)
"Possibilities [are] the children of hope...Keeping hope alive is to know how to keep going." (p.97)

What challenges and sorrows in your life have made you stronger and more determined to "keep going"?

No one reading this has had a life without unexpected challenges, accidents and sorrows! Everyone reading this has gone through the stress of carin
g for a sick child or an aging parent or recovering from an accident or illness.  Everyone has lost a loved one who is dearly missed. Yet isn't there always some reason to keep going
My oldest son, Steven was diagnosed with acute leukemia in 1970 when he was four and died in the hospital in my arms four years later and during his illness I was divorced!  What kept me going was the need to take care of his younger brother aged six, who is now an adult and to do this I had to get up every morning to get him off to school and go to work where I provided speech therapy to little children, many of whom were the age of the son I had just lost.
I invite you to think of all the challenges and obstacles that you have already overcome, some of which are hard for me to imagine. My clients have settled in the United States, most with their families, and have had to adjust to a foreign culture, to speaking English at work every day and to listening to and understanding the flow of English, and not just reading textbooks in English.
To "keep going" for you might mean to improve your confidence in the quality of your spoken English, to reduce an accent that prevents your American colleagues and friends from easily understanding what you are trying to tell them.  Give yourself credit for all the determination and the persistence you have already demonstrated. We encourage you to keep going and decide to take the next step!

Wisdom can be our launching pad or at least a platform on which we build our best lives.  I am personally attracted to and nourished by "wisdom teachings" and enjoy sharing them.  Like the warm rain, one never knows where wisdom teachings will fall and whom they will replenish.
Managers, forward this newsletter to your international "stars" who might be interested in this professional training opportunity.    We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
