Exhibits run April 29, 2016 through May 31, 2016 at the Gallery, 34 S Potomac Street, Hagerstown, MD.

The Maryland Symphony Orchestra has announced that Emily C. Socks has joined its administrative staff as Director of Advancement. Ms. Socks, who will oversee all development and fundraising programs for the MSO, including the coordination of a variety of special events and volunteer recruitment, comes to the orchestra with several years of program development experience, most recently with the Arc of Washington County. While at the Arc she played a significant role in the success of the annual "Dancing with the Arc Stars" fundraiser.
Ms. Socks, a native of Southern Maryland, is a graduate of Frostburg State University. She resides in Hagerstown with her husband Micah, a high school band director for the Washington County Public Schools, and their three children.

Public Art Meeting
Rodney Tissue, (back row), City Engineer of the City of Hagerstown along with Cochran Studio of Frederick presented the Hagerstown Cultural Trail Public Art Master Plan at the MSAC Public Art Meeting
held in Baltimore on Friday, April 1, 2016.
Maryland is part of a larger regional public art administrators group facilitated by Patricia Walsh at Americans for the Arts. Virginia, DC, and Maryland administrators have met on an ad hoc basis over the past few years and are seeking to formalize the group and schedule twice yearly meetings. The goals are to discuss local public art programs and projects and to provide technical assistance to build knowledge resources in order to advance public art.

Congratulations to all the students who were chosen to exhibit in the
2015-2016 Trilogy Fine Arts Competition sponsored by Trilogy-Drs. David Solberg, Andrew Oh, and Mitesh Kothari; Hager Hall; and WCPS. The art will be displayed over the coming year in the lobby of the Trilogy Professional Center, Hager Hall, and the Washington County Public Schools Central Office building.

Dr. Teresa Roberts recently presented at the National Art Education Association in Chicago 2016. Her artwork, which she is wearing, was selected for the NAEA Women's Caucus exhibition, Leading by Visual Voice.

The Fine Arts Company is pleased to welcome Cindy Downs back to the Fine Arts Company! Cindy's paintings are all original watercolors painted on location (plein air) in the tri-state area. Opening,
April 9, 2016 6pm to 8pm.
Ms. Downs' paintings are all original watercolors painted on location (plein air) in the tri-state area as weather permits. Her specialty is rural landscape often depicting historic structures in order to preserve our rural heritage which is so rapidly disappearing. Cindy taught art in Washington and Frederick counties in the public school system. She received her BS degree from Towson University and her MLA from Western Maryland College. Her studio is located in Clear Spring, Maryland. Cindy Downs is back as our featured artist for the month.

Pianist Thomas Pandolfi will be the guest artist when the Maryland Symphony Orchestra presents its final Masterworks Concerts of the 2015-2016 Season on Saturday, April 9 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 10 at 3 p.m. at the historic Maryland Theatre in downtown Hagerstown.

Two Rivers Woodwind Quintet
The Friends of Music will close out their 2015-2016 concert season with a concert by the Two Rivers Woodwind Quintet on Saturday, April 9.
The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Shepherdstown WV's Trinity Episcopal Church
It will feature the following works by French, Argentine, German and American composers:
* "Trios Pièces Brèves" (1930), by Jacques Ibert
* "Milonga Sin Palabras" (1979), by Astor Piazzolla
* "Quintet in B-flat, Op. 56" (1821), by Franz Danzi
* "Quintet in C, Op. 79" (1898), by August Klughardt
* Highlights from "Porgy and Bess" (1934), by George Gershwin
Admission to the concert will be free for Friends of Music members. The ticket price for others will be $20 per person ($18 before April 2). A Wilder View - Opening reception
featuring new images by Photographer Bruce Wilder.

Bruce Wilder, a photographer who works in both film and digital, picked up his first camera at the age of twelve. Within a decade, he began processing his own negatives and prints. While black and white photography launched his passion, the digital medium expanded his vision, allowing him to produce art images in color.
Now merging technology and art, Mr. Wilder has explored HDR. High Dynamic Range imagery enables him to create photographs with a greater dynamic range by combining several images of different exposures.
Mr. Wilder believes the artist's choice defines his potential. He embraces the diversity of photographic art, its endless possibilities whether dramatic black and white, dreamy monochrome, brilliant color or visions enhanced with creative digital manipulation.

Through her estate, Jean Cushwa an
d her heirs have established a program of support for a deserving college student from Washington County, Maryland, majoring in Studio Art, Art History, Art Education, Architecture, Design, or Museum Studies.
Deadline April 15!
The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts Announces the Jean Cushwa Art Scholarship Award. The $1,000 Scholarship will be awarded to one Graduating High School Senior who resides in Washington County, Maryland. The student must plan to pursue a career in Visual Art, Art History, Art Education, Design, Architecture, or Museum Studies. Funds are to be used to support tuition and fees for the first year of college.

Little Women - The Musical
Based on the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott, Little Women - The Musical follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March, as well as their mother, "Marmee". This show is incredibly moving and will make you laugh and cry! It is a beautiful portrayal of the lives of women during the Civil War, as well as the unbreakable bond between sisters and family.

Civil War Medicine Talk
Discovery Station is pleased to host this free program in collaboration with the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. Dr. Rathgeb is a semi-retired orthopedic surgeon and will be leading this program in period dress. The program will focus predominately on surgeries and amputations. He'll have the reproduction medical pack and surgical kit with him.
Date: April 30, 2016/Time: 1 PM to 2 PM
This talk is also an overview of what the
National Museum of Civil War Medicine
has to offer in its galleries, this lecture details the work and challenges of surgeons and medical personnel during the Civil War.
Learn about diseases and the medicines used to treat them, surgeries and amputations, soldiers' food and nutrition, and more. This talk also examines how Dr. Jonathan Letterman led the introduction of the first system of staged evacuation and treatment for mass casualties.

Explore printmaking tradition, using modern tools and materials. We will learn to cut an image into a plate, ink it, and transfer it onto paper. Can be used for simple things (such as fabric paint on tea towels) up to the most sophisticated art forms, from greeting cards to treasured images.

And Then There Were None
The Potomac Playmakers present the classic Agatha Christie murder mystery, "And Then There Were None"! Ten guilty strangers are trapped on an island. One by one, they are accused of murder; one by one they start to die. In this superlative mystery comedy, statuettes of little soldier boys on the mantle of a house on an island off the coast of Devon fall to the floor and break one by one as those in the house succumb to a diabolical avenger. A nursery rhyme tells how each of the ten "soldiers" met his death until there were none. Eight guests who have never met each other or their apparently absent host and hostess are lured to the island and, along with the two house servants, marooned. A mysterious voice accuses each of having gotten away with murder and then one drops dead - poisoned! One down and nine to go! The excitement never lets up in this compelling mystery!

The Fine Arts Company would like to welcome Julie Maynard to our store for the month of May. She'll be at our store May 14, 2016 from 6pm to 8pm for her art opening to talk about her work. Julie Maynard's work is a form of painting with paper on two- or three-dimensional surfaces, building up layers that incorporate objects picked up along the Potomac River and city streets.
