It's been 20 days since the Village Council convened for an Emergency Special Council  Meeting to discuss and consider a contract with a private vendor to assist the county with the debris pick-up and disposal process in Palmetto Bay in an effort to expedite the process. During the emergency meeting, the Village Council approved an agreement with Ceres Environmental Services, Inc., for debris removal services within Village streets, excepting county roads.

To be eligible for cost-reimbursement from FEMA for the removal of debris on county-owned streets, Palmetto Bay and Miami-Dade County had to enter into an inter-local agreement authorizing the village to clean-out the county roads. However, the county requested to proceed with the pick up from its own streets and other roads to avoid any confusion with FEMA reimbursement.

The village's contractor had been competitively selected back in 2014 and was under contract with the Village for emergency services. The contractor is working 7 days a week to complete the project and has picked up more than 65,000 cubic yards since they started 20 days ago.

To effectively tackle the work, the village was divided into 6 zones as illustrated on the maps below. The areas colored in pink identify the areas that are being picked up by the village's contractor, and the areas colored in purple are those where the debris is being removed by county contractors.

Residents are reminded to make sure that no trash is part of your debris pile, other than landscape items and other objects that are entirely made out of wood (ie, wood fences.) Piles that contain any other type of discarded items will not be picked up by the contractor.
