Dear Reader,
Please join us tonight to meet Terri Tate who tells her inspiring story in her new book A Crooked Smile. See more below, and then we'll see you at 5.

We are now delivering paid orders to Cafe Santana at 4100 MacArthur for those who are in the southern half of the city. That it is the site of the original store is quite sweet! Books that come in on one day will be delivered to the Cafe the next morning. They're open 7 days a week and mostly 7 to 3 so it's easy to pick up orders there all week! Thank you to Richard and Isela for agreeing to be out drop off spot! Rumor has it they have great coffee too.

We're planning some really great events in the next months as we also prepare for the fall and winter seasons. Louise Penny's new novel is released on Tuesday! There are quite a few books coming along in the near future that we can't wait to have on our shelves and put into your hands.
What are you looking forward to reading already?
Come by today (Saturday) and have a piece of cake. We're taking donations for the Southern Poverty Law Center and in return there's cake! The power of cake is strong. And it's a sweet way to protest!

Take care of each other and happy reading,

Luan

New and Notable

Glass Houses by Louise Penny $28.99  When a mysterious figure appears in Three Pines one cold November day, Armand Gamache and the rest of the villagers are at first curious. Then wary. Through rain and sleet, the figure stands unmoving, staring ahead. From the moment its shadow falls over the village, Gamache, now Chief Superintendent of the Sûreté du Québec, suspects the creature has deep roots and a dark purpose. Yet he does nothing. What can he do? Only watch and wait. And hope his mounting fears are not realized. But when the figure vanishes overnight and a body is discovered, it falls to Gamache to discover if a debt has been paid or levied.
Months later, on a steamy July day as the trial for the accused begins in Montréal, Chief Superintendent Gamache continues to struggle with actions he set in motion that bitter November, from which there is no going back. More than the accused is on trial. Gamache's own conscience is standing in judgment.

The Burning Girl by Claire Messud $25.95 Julia and Cassie have been friends since nursery school. They have shared everything, including their desire to escape the stifling limitations of their birthplace, the quiet town of Royston, Massachusetts. But as the two girls enter adolescence, their paths diverge and Cassie sets out on a journey that will put her life in danger and shatter her oldest friendship. The Burning Girl is a complex examination of the stories we tell ourselves about youth and friendship, and straddles, expertly, childhood's imaginary worlds and painful adult reality-crafting a true, immediate portrait of female adolescence.Claire Messud, one of our finest novelists, is as accomplished at weaving a compelling fictional world as she is at asking the big questions: To what extent can we know ourselves and others?

All the Dirty Parts by Daniel Handler $22  All The Dirty Parts is an unblinking take on teenage desire in a culture of unrelenting explicitness and shunted communication, where sex feels like love, but no one knows what love feels like. With short chapters in the style of Jenny Offill or Mary Robison, Daniel Handler gives us a tender, brutal, funny, intoxicating portrait of an age when the lens of sex tilts the world. "There are love stories galore," Cole tells us, "This isn't that. The story I'm typing is all the dirty parts."

Where's Rodney by Carmen Bogan with illustrations by Floyd Cooper $16.99 Rodney is that kid who just can't sit still. He's inside, but he wants to be outside. Outside is where Rodney always wants to be. Between school and home, there is a park. He knows all about that park. It's that triangle-shaped place with the yellow grass and two benches where grown-ups sit around all day. Besides, his momma said to stay away from that park. When Rodney finally gets a chance to go to a real park, with plenty of room to run and climb and shout, and to just be himself, he will never be the same.
**We will host Carmen in September so watch for details!**

Terri Tate
A Crooked Smile
How do you keep going when the doctors give you a two percent chance of survival? For Terri Tate, it was a blend of faith, perseverance, prescription-strength humor-and most of all, a heart that never quit. "I had to stop reproaching myself for not being able to adhere to any one system of treatment," writes Terri. "I needed to create my own recipe for healing."
