Greetings!

According to the   Times Higher Education World Report for 2016-17, UCSB is ranked as the top University worldwide in industry funding for research per capita. Our funding by Industry is more than twice the average funding for all the other UCs.

This newsletter describes a spectrum of activities within Engineering and the Sciences at UCSB that we hope strengthen UCSB's collaborations with industry.  One of the highlights of industry interaction is the Materials Research Outreach Program (MROP) that is taking place on Feb 1 and 2 (details below). We invite you to visit campus to meet our faculty and students at any time, and to gain more insight into why we are a hub of industry interaction.
For Industry: Materials Research Outreach Program (MROP) 2017
When: Wed, Feb 1, 2017 - 9:00am to Thurs, Feb 2, 2017 - 7:00pm
Where: UCSB Corwin Pavilion

The  program will focus on research efforts concerned with the science and engineering of organic-based macromolecules and polymers as well as inorganic materials and is designed to stimulate collaborative research between faculty groups at UCSB and industry scientists and engineers under the auspices of our Materials Research Laboratory. The scientific program will feature talks by UCSB faculty, students, and industry representatives where the scope of materials research at UCSB can be appreciated through one-on-one contact with graduate students and faculty. Highlights will include the Cheetham Lecture as well as a poster session. We hope that you will be able to join us!

Several UC-industry joint research efforts have been initiated as a result of this Program. As befits the interdisciplinary nature of this effort, our participating faculty represent a number of departments and many have joint appointments in more than one department.
Multi-User Facilities at UC Santa Barbara
UC Santa Barbara is one of the most industry-friendly campuses of all of the UC's and it shows.   One of our greatest efforts is in providing leading edge multi-user laboratory facilities.  UC Santa Barbara currently houses 28 multi-user facilities. The campus' best known facility, the Nano Fabrication Facility (NanoFab), has 12,700 ft² of clean room space to work in, which supports an average of 250 people/month within the facility doing a variety of projects in electronics, optics, materials, MEMs, physics and related efforts. For the last 15 years, over 40% of the more than 500 per annum user community are external.

A common theme of the multi-user facilities at UC Santa Barbara is that they provide industry users affordable rates for the tools and processes they need, as well as training and support from dedicated and knowledgeable staff that is tailored to specific research and development needs.  In some facilities staff are also available for hands-on work. Click here to see a detailed list of all of the facilities and equipment available at the multi-user facilities.
UCSB's College of Engineering promotes the success of low-income engineering students
With a $4.8M grant from the National Science Foundation, UC Santa Barbara's College of Engineering recently launched a new project to advance the careers of low-income undergraduate students majoring in engineering. The project, called  ESTEEM (Enhancing Success in Transfer Education for Engineering Majors), is an innovative collaboration with four regional community colleges: Allan Hancock College, Oxnard College, Santa Barbara City College, and Ventura College. It builds on a previous NSF-sponsored project that targeted engineering students who will be first in their family to complete a college degree, by providing substantial scholarships, academic support, career guidance, and opportunities to meet engineering professionals. ESTEEM will also support academically-talented community college students who plan to study engineering, and assist in their transition to a four-year university. In a collaboration with UC Santa Barbara's Gervirtz Graduate School of Education, the project will investigate barriers to academic success and the effectiveness of support mechanisms for these students.

For more information, contact Professor Susannah Scott, ESTEEM Project Director, at [email protected] or [email protected]

Capstone Team Success Stories
Teams of students work on Capstone projects sponsored by industry for 2-3 quarters in ME, CS, CE and ECE. This is a tremendous opportunity to get involved in undergraduate coursework and assess the abilities of a team of students.  Check out this link for prototype demos.
Crossing the Skills Chasm in SB
Last year, nearly 40% of U.S. employers reported difficulty filling jobs due to a lack of available talent. The increasing gap between available talent and business workforce needs poses a growing threat to the economic welfare of the region. This  program explores the nature of the talent shortage, its causes, implications and ways in which local educational institutions and businesses are working to creatively address the issue.

When: Wed, Jan 18, 5-8pm
Where: Cabrillo Pavillion Arts Center, 1118 E. Cabrillo Blvd, Santa Barbara
We always appreciate any input you may have on how we can improve, so please don't hesitate to send us your feedback. Thank you for your continued interest in our program. For further information, please visit the Industry Center website at:   www.industry.ucsb.edu
