Toros Lose Legend in Dr. John L. Johnson, CSUDH's First Athletics Director
|
Dr. John L. Johnson, the first Athletics Director and head coach of the men's golf program from 1968-2013, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 96. He founded the Toros' Athletics Department and coached the school's first intercollegiate golf team, a position he held for 45 years.

Patti "Peejay" Brun (MA '02)
was named the University of Texas at Arlington's new head softball coach. For nine of the past 11 years, Brun had been assistant coach of softball at Texas State University. During the 2015 and 2016 seasons she was the head coach at the University of Hawai'I at Hilo.
Yvette Cope (MS '14)
was selected as the Lompoc Valley Medical Center healthcare district's new chief nurse executive. She is currently vice president of Central Coast Nurse Professionals.
was named the 2017 Simon Collier Quality Award recipient by the American Society for Quality's Los Angeles Section. He was selected for spreading quality globally and activities related to helping U.S. and global clients on FDA warning letters and ISO Quality Systems remediation.
Jay Morris (BA '10)
was appointed assistant coach of the San José State men's basketball program. Morris comes to San José State after spending the 2016-17 season as the director of player development for the Long Beach State men's basketball team. During that time Morris successfully implemented a personal development plan focused on student-athlete success after basketball.
Karl Schwabauer (MBA '04)
was promoted to Partner of BKM Sowan Horan, LLP in the Dallas office. He will continue to lead the Forensic Accounting, Business Valuation, and Litigation Consulting group. He is a CPA, CFF and CVA and is a member of the AICPA, TSCPA and the American Bar Association where he serves on the Business and Commercial Litigation Committee and the Expert Witness Committee.
John D. Spiak (BA '93)
was awarded a $100,000 grant over two years from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts to benefit Cal State Fullerton's Grand Central Art Center artist-in-residence program. Spiak is the director and chief curator of the center. This is the second foundation grant awarded to the center that he has secured.
Jordyn Akari Terukina (BS '16)
was elected as one of the princesses of the Nisei Week Court during the Nisei Week celebration in Los Angeles. She is currently a therapist at a local hospital.
Mark Yokoyama (MA '95)
announced his retirement from the position of Alhambra City Manager, which he assumed in 2016. As city manager, he served as the chief advisor to the City Council and oversaw the day-to-day operations of 10 city departments, including the police and fire departments, with a $140 million budget and 400 employees. Previously he served as chief of police and worked in local government for a total of 30 years.

Dee Hardison (MA '81)
former two-term mayor of Torrance, passed away following a stroke at the age of 79. Hardison, who also spent eight years as a City Council member and almost a decade on the Parks and Recreation and Planning Commissions, was a 2011 recipient of the Jared Sidney Torrance Award, which recognizes an individual's sustained service to the community and is considered the city's highest honor. Hardison was also recognized as a Torrance YMCA Woman of the Year, a Switzer Center South Bay Woman of the Year, and a CSUDH Distinguished Alumni.
