Camp Kudzu E-News: January 2017 Edition
Meet our Campers: Meredith, age 17

Every summer, kids of all ages learn something new at Camp Kudzu. For some it may be how to count carbs, pre-bolus for meals or give their own injections. Others might learn how to swim, ride a bike or conquer a fear. But for many, like our camper, Meredith, one of the greatest lessons learned at camp is acceptance. "The most valuable thing I have learned at [Camp Kudzu] is to just embrace [living with diabetes]." At Camp Kudzu, campers are surrounded by hundreds of kids and adults that understand what life is like living with type 1 diabetes. No one stares. No one judges. Instead, everyone supports one another on their journey with T1D and has the time of their lives! "I've come to camp for the past 10 years because it's the greatest place on earth... but also, it's home for me." Watch this video and see for yourself why campers (and volunteers) come back year after year!

Camper Registration Opens TOMORROW

Registration  for all 2017 summer camp programs opens TOMORROW, January 18,  at 9:00 am! Registration will remain open for each session until the session begins, but be sure to register soon as sessions do fill up quickly. Once registration is open, you will be able to access the online application (using the same registration system we launched last year) via the Camp Kudzu website. All scholarship requests will be done on the application, during the registration process. If you have any questions, please call us at 404-250-1811.

Summer Medical Volunteers Needed

Volunteer registration for Summer 2017 is currently open! As applications continue to come in, we are beginning to see that there will be a great need for medical volunteers for Session 2 (July 1-7) and Session 3 (July 8-14) at Camp Twin Lakes. If you are a medical professional and are available during either (or both!) of these sessions, we encourage you to complete a volunteer application as soon as possible. Please contact Anna Albritton, Clinical Program Manager, at aalbritton@campkudzu.org with any questions.

Emergency Preparation with T1D

No matter how much we plan ahead or how prepared we think we are, sometimes life doesn't work just the way we wish. Unforeseen circumstances can throw a wrench in plans, especially when you have a child with type 1 diabetes. Instances such as inclement weather, national emergencies and other unexpected events call for advanced planning. Read this article and get some tips on how to prepare yourself as best as possible for the unforeseen.

Camp Kudzu Staff News

Please join us in welcoming Mandy Conroy to Camp Kudzu's staff as our Registration Coordinator and congratulating Whitney LeHew on her promotion to the position of Outreach and Program Manager!
Whitney LeHew joined Camp Kudzu's staff as Camper Services Administrator in the fall of 2014 and has gone the extra mile to assist families through the registration and scholarship application process.  In her new role, Whitney will reach out to families throughout Georgia who haven't yet heard of diabetes camp and focus on the needs of children of low income so that they too can benefit from Camp Kudzu's programs. She is also responsible for our program evaluations and reporting of outcomes.
Before joining the Camp Kudzu staff as the Registration Coordinator, Mandy Conroy served as Partner Support and Hospital Programs Manager for Camp Twin Lakes where she directed multiple summer camps for children with chronic illnesses and life challenges. She has a Bachelor's degree in Nutrition from Georgia State University and a Master's degree in Child Development and Family Relations from East Carolina University. She has a passion for working with children and families and looks forward to serving the families of Camp Kudzu.  Mandy is a Georgia native and lives in Tucker with her husband, son and their two dogs. She enjoys the outdoors and hiking with her family.
