When the board of United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra established its goal to
raise third grade reading scores, we were aware that we would need the active involvement of the
entire community. We pledged to bring the community together for a wider discussion in order to create authentic system change.
Over the past year-and-a-half, we brought together individuals and multi-sector organizations to explore the issue.
We learned that people care about this. A number of participants have committed leadership, resources, aligned programs of their own, potential linkages, marketing assistance and planning expertise.
We are excited to report to you that we have moved ahead with a formal
'Community Solutions Action Plan' (CSAP) to be completed in 2016-17.
This model for community planning is offered by the Campaign for Grade Level Reading,
a collaborative effort by foundations, nonprofit partners, business leaders, government
agencies, states and communities across the nation to ensure that more children in low-incom
e families succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career, and active citizenship.
The Campaign for Grade Level Reading includes over 240 communities across the nation.
