Here I Stand!

A Note From Pastor Linda

Confirmation Blessing and the Laying on of Hands:
Stir up in this beloved child of God the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen.

Dear Lutherans,

On Sunday, October 29, we celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation of the Church; that day (October 31, 1517) when Martin Luther defiantly nailed his 95 Thesis on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. The 95 Theses, which would later become the foundation of the Protestant Reformation, were written in a remarkably humble and academic tone, questioning rather than accusing. The overall thrust of the document was nonetheless quite provocative. The first two of the theses contained Luther's central idea, that God intended believers to seek repentance and that faith alone, and not deeds, would lead to salvation. The other 93 theses, a number of them directly criticizing the practice of indulgences, supported these first two.

On Sunday at 10:30am we celebrate the Rite of Confirmation or Affirmation of Baptism for our 9th grade students and their families. These students have been instructed in the faith, have completed service projects and participated in fellowship activities. They have designed a Faith Project that will be displayed in the Upper Commons area. They have demonstrated a working knowledge of faith AND life.

This week we pray for these young adults as they ready to say: "Yes, Lord, here I stand!" They are:
 Hannah Anderson
McKenna Andrews
Cayden Christenson
Micah Cortes
Abbigail Jones
Katelyn Kaup
Johanna Livermore
Lily Monson
Olivia Pekron
Harris Ritter
Jack Slagle
Jackson Turner
Cameron Zuniga

On Sunday be sure to congratulate each of these young adults-and then take a look at their Faith Projects, each one unique, speaking their own journey of faith.

Grace and Peace!

Luther's Rose - What Does This Mean?

A Note From Martin Luther - Describing Luther's Rose

Grace and peace from the Lord. As you desire to know whether my painted seal, which you sent to me, has hit the mark, I shall answer most amiably and tell you my original thoughts and reason about why my seal is a symbol of my theology.
  • The first should be a black cross in a heart, which retains its natural color, so that I myself would be reminded that faith in the Crucified saves us. "For one who believes from the heart will be justified" (Romans 10:10). Although it is indeed a black cross, which mortifies and which should also cause pain, it leaves the heart in its natural color. It does not corrupt nature, that is, it does not kill but keeps alive. "The just shall live by faith" (Romans 1:17) but by faith in the crucified.
  • Such a heart should stand in the middle of a white rose, to show that faith gives joy, comfort, and peace. In other words, it places the believer into a white, joyous rose, for this faith does not give peace and joy like the world gives (John 14:27). That is why the rose should be white and not red, for white is the color of the spirits and the angels (cf. Matthew 28:3; John 20:12).
  • Such a rose should stand in a sky-blue field, symbolizing that such joy in spirit and faith is a beginning of the heavenly future joy, which begins already, but is grasped in hope, not yet revealed.
  • And around this field is a golden ring, symbolizing that such blessedness in Heaven lasts forever and has no end. Such blessedness is exquisite, beyond all joy and goods, just as gold is the most valuable, most precious and best metal.
This is my compendium theologiae [summary of theology]. I have wanted to show it to you in good friendship, hoping for your appreciation. May Christ, our beloved Lord, be with your spirit until the life hereafter. Amen.

Chapter 3 Retreat
November 18, 2017

Perhaps you've finished building your career... Maybe you've recently retired or just beginning to think about it... Or the children you've raised have left or are beginning to leave the nest. Each of these scenarios, and many more, represents a transitional and potentially transformational period in life, the turning of a page, the beginning of a NEW chapter in life- the 3
rd Chapter. It is a time that you might find yourself asking, "What's next?". This period offers both opportunity and challenges. It is a time to renew and refocus.
Join others as we explore what this time means in God's time.
