Ho Ho Ho!

We had a very Merry Christmas here at Parkway Elementary.  Our 3rd grade students and teachers collected and dropped items at the Hiway 80 Rescue Mission.

The 3rd Grade Teachers organized a service project for the entire grade level.  The teachers contacted Hiway 80 Mission to see what items the mission needed.  Hiway 80 Mission gave Parkway a list of items.  For the next three weeks the students and teachers brought in toothpaste, deodorant, socks, liquid soaps, toothbrushes, and nail clippers.  They gathered the items,  sorted them and went to the mission after early dismissal on Dec. 16 to deliver them.  Hiway 80 Mission was so thankful for the gifts and our 3rd grade teachers and students were blessed to get to serve in this way as a grade level!   Way to go, Parkway Elementary!

Snowman STEAM Challenge

The 1st and 2nd Grade classes worked and collaborated on a STEAM Challenge.  The challenge was to make a snowman at least 5 inches tall.  The students used Unifix cubes to measure the snowman to ensure the correct measurable height.  The students planned with their teams and built their snowman from Play-Doh and craft sticks.  The biggest challenge was to make sure snowman could stand for 10 seconds without falling.  All teams completed the challenge,  students totally enjoyed the activity.

Student Council Makes Cards for Fifth Graders

As a way to welcome fifth graders to the Pine Tree Middle School campus, Student Council has been actively making cards for each student enrolled in fifth grade since the beginning of the school year. The cards were created as a way to say, "You are important, and you matter at PTMS."

Each card was personalized with students' names, colored, and decorated. Fifth grade Student Council member Catherine Brock thinks "[making the cards] was a great way to welcome the fifth graders to Pine Tree Middle School. I think students were surprised and happy because they probably weren't expecting anything."

The members of Student Council were excited to serve their campus in this way and thought it would be a nice gesture to greet all of the incoming fifth graders. Student Council member, Rylee Warwick said, "Making the cards was fun, and it was inspiring because it encouraged me to think about my future as a teacher one day." The cards were given the week of December 1, 2016, due to the nature of creating over 300 individual cards for the students.

Fifth grader Kamreon Lloyd explained his feelings about receiving his card by saying, "I liked it. It gives you the lift you need because it shows how this school cares about you."

Pine Tree Middle School Student Council will continue to serve the students of PTMS in various ways throughout the 2016-2017 school year.

The Junior High male athletes competed in an additional food drive. The 7th grade team won by collecting 325 cans. Overall, they collected over 500 cans to donate to the Hiway 80 Rescue Mission.

Student Council members purchased Christmas gifts for the children at Hwy 80 Rescue Mission. The students went to Walmart with a list and a budget. In all, students were able to spend $500 on gifts and kitchen items for the women and children at the shelter.  They even received a donation from a woman at Walmart who saw what the students were doing and wanted to help.  "This is one of our favorite projects" Student Council sponsor,Mrs. Riggs, said, "The students look forward to helping their community and they feel good about having a direct, positive effect in the Pine Tree area."

Pine Tree High School News

Second semester arrives with a busy schedule for PTHS

Christmas break is over, and second semester has arrived with a busy schedule for the students at Pine Tree High School.

Pine Tree UIL Academic teams finished fourth in the Pine Tree meet on Tuesday and are now getting ready for upcoming events at Mount Pleasant, Hallsville, Longview, College Station and then the district meet back in Mount Pleasant.
Current events won first as did Copy Editing and a few other events. Overall, Cathy Williams, UIL coordinator, was happy with the first meet of the year and said the team should be a district contender.

The cheerleading squad attended a state cheer competition in Fort Worth on Tuesday and Wednesday, competing with a host of other 5A schools for state recognition. The girls competed in three different sections and then, if they were in the finals, put all three of those together into one performance piece.

Current juniors, sophomores and freshmen had meetings with counselors about what courses they would like to take next year, and seniors were given their graduation materials this week so they can prepare for their big day in May.

School will be slightly different for Pine Tree High School in the coming days as approved by the school board.
The class day will start six minutes earlier, at 8:24 a.m., so that those with test exemptions do not have to come to school during testing days.
This year, for the first year, Pine Tree High School is in class by the minute and not by the school day. In order to meet the minutes requirement and still have the proper amount of class time, school will begin earlier.   "I don't think anyone will really notice," Principal Cindy Gabehart said. "It is a small addition to the school day that will help us when it comes to exams."

One-Act Play is gearing up for March 8 competition, and Skills USA and Welding are also getting ready for their state competition.

High School instructors are busy getting second semester started, and with that comes a host of assignments, tests and quizzes.  "We have had a good year thus far, and I see no reason why that cannot continue," Dr. Cliff Lightfoot, Associate Principal/CTE Director at PTHS, said.

Assistant Principal Harold Jackson is working with senior Keitralle Sutton and Eric Hawkins, senior class president, on an essay competition during Black History Month in February.

Sports teams are rolling along and preparing for their seasons with MLK Holiday on the horizon as well as President's Day it is really just a short ride into March and Spring Break.

"You just look up and it is over," Senior Deysy Perez said. "There is a lot to do and then, if you do not stop and take a break to enjoy your senior year, it is over and you are headed out into the big world."

Seniors are turning in baby pictures and quotes for the senior slide show, as well as their portraits, and many of them are waking up to the realization that their days at Pine Tree are very numbered.
"I have waited for this time for so long, and now it is swiftly moving along," Perez said.
