SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

Brylle P.

What surprised you about the college application process?  I  was surprised that once you know what the application process is about, and you are actually on top of it, it's pretty easy.  At first it was really stressful, but once I learned how to do it, it wasn't so bad.

What are you interested in studying in college?  I'm interested in engineering or medicine.  My parents, uncle and cousin studied engineering or things related to it in the Philippines, so I've always been interested in it.  Since I was young, I've been interested in how people get well and how the human body can miraculously heal sometimes, so I'm also interested in medicine.

What activities do you want to be involved in during college? I am most interested in doing lab research and going beyond what we are allowed to do in high school, and in working with actual testing and technical equipment.  I would also like to volunteer at donation centers and to be involved in computer clubs.

What advice do you have for high school juniors? Get started early.  Get on top of things before your deadlines.  Have your essays and applications reviewed by a 2nd pair of eyes and checked by adults like your parents and CollegeTracks.  Don't stress yourself too much because that could have a negative effect on your applications.
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Susan Kitt

Describe one interesting fact about yourself.   I have two grown daughters who both graduated from B-CC.  I was the PTSA president when they were students.

What are your hobbies? I enjoy tennis and biking.

What is your current/ past career? Please describe your journey to that career field.  I received my BA in Urban Studies and then went to graduate school and received my MBA in finance and real estate finance.  My early career was in real estate development. One project I worked on was the office building right down the street from B-CC with the neon sculpture on the facade. My background in real estate led me to be involved in school construction as a volunteer representing the school communities. I still volunteer in real estate related projects and work as a "money manager" helping senior citizens stay in control of their financial lives.

SEARCHING & APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are free money for you to attend college. There are tons of scholarship opportunities and you should apply for them to reduce the amount of money that you and your family will have to pay for your education.

There are two main sources of scholarships:
  • Scholarships from colleges: Many colleges offer scholarships based on merit (such as a high GPA or strong test scores), financial need, or athletic ability. Check your college's financial aid websites for information on scholarship opportunities, eligibility, requirements, and applications.
  • Scholarships from private or outside organizations: Private groups offer money for different reasons, including community involvement, service experience, ethnicity and location. Pick up a CollegeTracks Scholarship Packet for a list of scholarships for which you are eligible!
Similar to college applications, scholarship applications may require that you complete application forms, write an essay, ask for letters of recommendation, and submit additional materials.  Know your deadlines and plan ahead so you submit your applications on time.
