Wellesley Books Newsletter
October 25th, 2017
|
It's less than a week until Halloween, and it's time for hot drinks and bone-chilling reads. We have two tables dedicated to spooky books, one for adults and one for kids, featuring everything from classic ghost stories to modern horror and spine-tingling mysteries, from eerie non-fiction to A Creepy Pair of Underwear (one of our favorite kid's books for the season). There's also a table with all kinds of fun gifts for the holiday, perfect for Halloween parties and home decoration; check out those cool strings of skull lights. You'll find creepy, spooky, and downright monstrously fun treats for the whole family, and -- don't be scared -- but we only have sixty one days until Christmas!

Bookseller Recommendations
|
|
Phyllis Recommends:
Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward
This is a beautiful rendition of an incredibly gut-wrenching story about a young boy forced to care for his younger sister amidst his mother's downward spiral into meth addiction. So many important issues are examined in this exploration of a multi-generational, multi-racial family living on the edge. Ward's poetic prose provides a fine balance to the horrors she narrates. Impossible to put down and impossible to forget!
Lorna Recommends:
Uncommon Type by Tom Hanks
It turns out that Tom Hanks the writer is just as appealing and engaging as Tom Hanks, the Oscar-winning actor. His seventeen short stories will take you to unexpected places, and they are at times funny, moving, and charming. For his legions of fans, this is a must-read book.
Sally Recommends:
Going Into Town by Roz Chast
In her own inimitable way, Roz Chast has written and, of course, illustrated a humorous, entertaining, and (most surprisingly) extremely informative book on New York City. For both newcomers and lovers of the city, this is a great read.
Spinning
by Tillie Walden
Spinning is an amazing coming of age story about a young competitive figure skater's journey through growing up and being a girl. This is a heartfelt story that will remind you of what's important, who is there for you, and how sometimes it's okay to get lost. It's a must read for anyone trying to find their place in the world. As a bonus, you get an ice skating 101 for those of us who don't know our jumps and spins.
