Get Artistic in the New Year  
Did you know that admission to Rutgers' Zimmerli Art Museum is free and that the museum offers events, educational programs, and exhibits? Here is a sampling of what is offered this month:
Zimmerli Art Museum offers drawing classes for children and adults.
  • Circa 1866: European Prints through January 15  
  • Circa 1966: American Prints through January 29

  • Innovation and Abstraction: Women Artists and Atelier 17
  • Reflections: Photographs of Iconic African Americans by Terrence A. Reese (TAR)

Performances    
New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra presents "Dark Matter," the next concert in its Reframing Classical Music Salon Series on January 29. The afternoon features short works mixed with tastings, pours, and conversation in an informal atmosphere.

The New Brunswick Jazz Project offers more than 12 nights of free jazz this month at venues throughout the downtown, including Shirazette and Sonic Wallpaper at the Hyatt Regency on January 5.

Indiana Jones is heading to New Brunswick
on January 8 with his whip, his hat, and a live orchestra at the State Theatre. The epic score will be performed live with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, enhancing the on-screen action.


On January 13, the State Theatre presents M.E. Live - Melissa Etheridge, one of rock music's great female icons. 

Opera at Rutgers presents Dialogues of the Carmelites on January 27 and 29. During the Reign of Terror - the French Revolution - a noblewoman joins an order of nuns and learns that religious vows are not a refuge from worldly fears.

Rutgers University Libraries presents a talk with author David Bianculli, TV critic for NPR's Fresh Air and TVWorthWatching.com on January 4. The event is free.

Rutgers Geology Museum 49th Annual
Open House is January 28.
 
The 49th Annual Rutgers Geology Museum Open House will take place on January 28 and includes a mineral sale, kids activities, and a variety of lectures, including "Volcanoes and Life" and "Dense Gas in Distant, Dusty Galaxies." Events are free and no pre-registration is required.

The New Jersey Film Festival kicks off its spring schedule on January 28 with Knights of New Jersey, a comedic, behind-the-scenes look at a troupe of Renaissance Fair actors.

Rutgers Recreation offers children's swim lessons, rock climbing, birthday parties, and summer camps. Register today for classes beginning later this month.

Students 16-18 are invited to attend a Rutgers Pre-College Academy this summer. Choose from three intensive, one-week residential academies focused on engineering, STEM, or leadership.

Doktor Kaboom: Live Wire! The Electricity Tour visits the State Theater on January 21 for a romp through the history and fundamental principles of electrical energy.

Rutgers Gardens is open year round. 
The Rutgers Gardens is a beautiful place to visit year round. Admission is free and it is open 365 days a year. The Rutgers Gardens Winter Market will take place once a month. This month it will be open on January 20.

View the night sky at the Robert A. Schommer Astronomical Observatory at Rutgers on select Thursdays, weather permitting. Viewing dates this month are January 12, 19, and 26.

Support the Scarlet Knight men's and women's basketball teams throughout January and enjoy promotions, including free camo caps, T-shirt exchange, and blackout headbands.

Rutgers' wrestling team continues its climb in the national rankings with home matches on January 6, 20, and 22. Come out to the RAC and cheer the team on!

The New Brunswick Community Food Alliance has a position for a part-time program coordinator to help with cultivating healthy food access and sustainability in New Brunswick. Applicants must be bilingual in English/Spanish. Applications accepted through January 9.

The beautiful and historic City Hall in New Brunswick is celebrating its 90th anniversary with an exhibit of photographs and artifacts from the 1920s and 1930s.

Interested in culinary arts or baking and pastry arts? Then stop by the Promise Culinary School open house on January 11 to find out about the school's affordable and quality culinary education.

The Heldrich is hosting a Craft Beer & Spirit Festival to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth & Middlesex Counties on January 28. Over 25 Spirits & Craft Breweries will be represented.

Rutgers Health University Dental Associates has opened a new practice on Somerset Street offering the latest treatments and is open to all.
 
The Plaza at Livingston Campus is home to nine retail establishments open to the public, including: kite+key - the Rutgers Tech Store, Rutgers Cinema, 16 Handles Frozen Yogurt, Starbucks, Qdoba, The Wright Cut Barber Shop, Kilmer's Market, Hoja Asian Fusion, and Henry's Diner.

Rutgers Cinema is offering two specials for the general public through January 13. Discounted tickets: $5 matinee tickets (before 6 p.m.); $7 evening tickets; and a small popcorn and soda for $5.

Rutgers University Press is celebrating its 80th anniversary by offering up to 80 percent off of a large selection of books in an array of subject areas.

New Brunswick Free Public Library has added LearningExpress Library with free access to hundreds of online resources, including passing a career licensing exam, achieving high school equivalency credentials, and preparing for college admissions tests.
