3rd Quarter Profit Report: Cash May be King but...
By Dr. Albert D. Bates Director of Research, Profit Planning Group
Al Bates

Distributors always seem to think they are somewhat short of the desired level of cash. In reality, they probably have more than enough cash to operate successfully even in a slow-growth economy. The challenge is that if another serious economic downturn takes place, their cash balances could disintegrate.

Because of this lack of cash, many firms made significant moves over the last decade in an attempt to generate cash. Those moves were only occasionally geared towards improving profitability to increase cash. Instead, they were more likely centered on reducing inventory and accounts receivable at the existing profit level. Such actions have created as many problems as they have solved. 4th Quarter ITR Economic Report
By Brian Beaulieu, ITR Economics

The US economy, as measured by Real GDP, is growing. US Real GDP was up 2.2% in the second quarter of 2017. Accelerating growth in the Manufacturing sector (up 1.0% year over year) and the Mining sector (up 1.6%) are contributing to the accelerating growth in US Industrial Production (up 0.8%). However, US Electric and Gas Utilities Production is contracting (down 0.6%) and will decline during the next two quarters. Year-over-year rise in Utilities Production will return by early 2018.

North America Robotics New Orders during the 12 months through March (units, most recent data) was up 15.6% compared to the year ago level. The ITR Checking Points™ system indicates that Phase B, Accelerating Growth, will extend through at least the next quarter. Expanding New Orders signal rise in the automation industry and bode well for AHTD members.  Click  here  to read full article. This is a members-only article. Don't forget to log in.

New Study Assesses Industry Benefits and Barriers to Digitalization

By: Raj Batra, President, Siemens Digital Factory Division, U.S.

A decade ago, the phrases "digital twin" and "virtual reality" might have seemed more like hype than reality. Today, as Chief Executive recently reported, manufacturers are leveraging digitalization to get to market faster and reduce engineering costs.
Now, as digital tools and data become the new currency, companies without a long-term digitalization strategy are worried about being left behind. This was the clear message conveyed by a new study conducted by Longitude Research on behalf of Siemens. Click here to read full article.

Do You Want to Win Online? Free Webinar!

Too many companies think an attractive website is a winning online strategy. What they fail to realize is a website must satisfy the search engines if it is going to bring in new prospects. Why? Because search engines are information curators. If they serve up websites that don't answer customers' search requests, they lose market share and ad revenue. As a result, search engines decide who appears on the first search engine result page (SERP) based on information that a computer can analyze, including content, coding and backlinks  (notice that attractive graphics are not on the list, although they are very important to the customer experience). This webinar, scheduled for Thursday, November 30, will look at content, coding, and backlinks; how to evaluate where you are today in each area, and how to make sure that your website wins the only battle that matters: the one between you and your competitors. Join Tech B2B's free webinar on November 30, 2017. Click here for more details.
Members Embrace Hard Truths About Sales
November 16 CRM Roundtable Available for AHTD Members!
By Brian Gardner

Late last week, I held a roundtable with more than a dozen AHTD members to get them thinking about their current CRM processes and how they can leverage CRM to gain a competitive edge.

As I listened to the challenges and strategies of members at last week's roundtable, I realized that the tendency to ignore inconvenient or unpleasant truths affects us in many areas of our lives, including in our businesses. In the sales realm, choosing blissful ignorance may sabotage sales efforts and CRM initiatives. Click here to read the article and to find out about free roundtable discussion.

BULLETIN BOARD

Selling is Evolving. Are you?
By Troy Harrison

When I started my business in 2004, I would tell people that I was a sales trainer, and they would respond by asking, "Do you do product sales or service sales?" My response was always the same - that sales in the modern era was all about service. Everyone had great products, so the sale was about wrapping a great service model around those products and showing why you were the best resource. That was one evolution of selling, but there's been another, more significant evolution. Click here to read full article.
