FEATURED EVENT: Youth Invasion
On Thursday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the City of Hillsboro hosted its fifth annual Youth Invasion event at the Civic Center, where 286 high school students had the chance to interact with current City staff members and learn more about the wide variety of jobs that are available in city government. Their day started with a keynote address about career and college pathways delivered by HSD administrators Travis Reiman and Brooke Nova, and City administrators Michael Brown and Robby Hammond. Following that, students attended three sessions, from among 26 offered, on career areas that interested them. Staff members shared information on the types of opportunities available right out of high school, after earning a certificate or two-year degree, and with a four-year degree or higher. After the sessions, students and staff enjoyed food carts, face painting, and a photo booth.

Hillsboro Schools Bond Would Have Independent Oversight
UPCOMING EVENTS OCTOBER
If passed, the Hillsboro Schools bond would renew the existing tax rate of $2.24 per $1,000 of assessed value; secure at least $6 million in state matching funds, which would be used to complete additional projects; and would have independent oversight from a committee of appointed citizens. Learn more about the bond at
www.Hillsboro-Bond.org.

Career and College Readiness Starts in Kindergarten |
Here are three top reasons "career and college ready" is important to every grade level, including kindergarten: 1) Our students need to be introduced to the world of possibility; 2) Students are creating their identities about who they are and aren't in our classrooms and school spaces - we can help them discover their natural talents and interests; and 3) Each year, students need to learn the standards in order to stay at or above grade level so all doors are open to them post-graduation. Read more on this topic in this month's OSP Connected.

Stay Healthy this Cold and Flu Season |
Cold and flu season has already begun, but there are things you can do to keep yourself and your children healthier. Prevention measures include washing your hands frequently, getting lots of rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth. The single best thing you can do to avoid getting the flu, however, is getting a flu shot! Your doctor, several local pharmacies, and our own
school-based health center at Century High School are all places you and/or your child can get a flu shot. Our website has several resources on
disease prevention and
when to keep your child home if they are sick.
