Convention 2017: Executive Elections

Four positions on the SUMA Board will be up for election at Convention 2017, including t hree positions on the SUMA Executive Committee:
  • President;
  • Vice-President of Towns; and 
  • Vice-President of Villages, Resort Villages, and Northern Municipalities.
The Northern Regional Director will also be elected during the Northern Regional Meeting.

Convention 2017: Get Your Event Tickets Soon

If you want to attend either of the ticketed social events at Convention 2017, get your tickets soon! Tickets for the Welcome Reception on Sunday night ($30 per person) and for the President's Banquet and Awards Ceremony on Tuesday night ($60 per person) are going fast. If you don't get your tickets soon, you may miss out.

Get the details on the Agenda and Events page of the SUMA website, and get your tickets through the online registration system.

Infrastructure Funding

You have 20 days left to get your application in for funding under the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund, and the Provincial Territorial Infrastructure Component of the New Building Canada Fund. The deadline is  noon on Monday, January 23, 2017. You can use the same online form to apply to both programs. Details are available on the Government of Saskatchewan website.

Convention 2017: Answering Your Convention Questions

Whether this is your first SUMA convention, or you just want to be prepared for Convention 2017, this document will help you  get the scoop. For example:
 
Why are there security guards onsite?
Security at convention is for your peace of mind. We have security at the event to ensure that only registered delegates have access. There will be security at Convention 2017 so please be sure to wear your name tag all day long and bring your tickets to the evening events.
 
What is the Municipal Marketplace Tradeshow?
The Municipal Marketplace Tradeshow is held in conjunction with the annual convention and is open to convention delegates and municipal employees. There will be more than 180 exhibitors offering products and services that are relevant to municipal needs. Time is set aside for delegates to visit the exhibitors, and municipal employees are encouraged to contact SUMA prior to Convention at 306-525-4379 to register as a tradeshow observer. Please stop at the registration desk for a badge to get your tradeshow badge for  access.

Please note that only registered delegates and municipal employees will be granted access to the tradeshow.

Advocacy: Crime Reduction Committee Tour 

The Saskatchewan Party Caucus Committee on Crime Reduction is touring the province to examine crime in Saskatchewan. Interim President Goulden appeared on behalf of SUMA at the Yorkton stop December 21, but we encourage members to attend or provide submissions to  [email protected]

If you attend or provide a submission, please also  email your thoughts to Sean McKenzie; we may also provide a written submission and would like to have a full picture of what our members have to say.

Convention 2017: Resolution Packages

Get prepared for the resolutions session at Convention 2017 by reviewing  the package emailed to you last month, including the process for the session at Convention. This process allows us to make the most of our time on the Convention floor.

Remember, you won't receive a physical copy in the mail, but the package is available under Resolutions on the Convention 2017 page of our website.

Building Capacity:
Pre-Convention MLDP Modules

Registration is open for MLDP workshops  conveniently scheduled for the day before Convention 2017 begins:  Saturday, February 4, 2017, at TCU Place in Saskatoon. Register today for one of the five modules, including Human Resources in the Municipal Workplace, and Municipal Economic Development Fundamentals. Questions? Funding: Clean Technology and Indigenous Economic Growth

Western Economic Development Canada will be accepting proposals from January 25 - February 23, 2017 for the next round of its  Western Diversification Program.  Funding for the 2017 program will support clean technology or Indigenous economic development projects that help to develop and diversify the economy, and activities where economic and/or employment benefits accrue primarily within Western Canada. Learn more about the fund and get ready to apply.

Funding: Rural and Remote High Speed Internet 

A new initiative by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada will invest up to $500 million by 2021 in new and upgraded high speed Internet infrastructure for rural and remote communities. The national call for applications will be open from January 16 - March 13, 2017. You can start preparing now by checking the  eligibility map  to see if your community qualifies, and accessing the materials on the Connect to Innovate website.

Funding: Green Municipal Fund

The next  deadline to apply for capital project funding from Federation of Canadian Municipalities' Green Municipal Fund (GMF) is March 1, 2017. Funding includes loans combined with grants for energy, transportation, waste and water capital projects through GMF.
 
Consulting with FCM early in the process to help ensure the success of your application. Contact a GMF advisors today to ask questions and find out if your project is eligible before you apply.

Building Capacity: Municipal Management Essentials Training 

SUMA has partnered with  SARM and the Southeast College to deliver dynamic and informational business workshops. The Municipal Management Essentials program has a stream of training for administrative staff and another for foremen. Many of these workshops would be applicable to council members and they are welcome to attend as well. Please see this information sheet and this training schedule for more information on upcoming sessions.

Building Capacity: 
LA FOIP 101

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner is presenting an information session in Regina: "LA FOIP 101 - Access and Privacy Basics for Cities, Towns, Villages and Municipalities" on  Monday, January 23, 2017, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. They will choose a venue based on the number of interested attendees, and depending on interest, the training may be available as a webinar. Survey: Water and Wastewater Treatment Chemicals

Last month, emailed a water treatment chemical survey to members. You still have time to complete the survey; the deadline has been extended to January 31, 2017We need to know:
  • which chemicals you use;
  • how much you order;
  • what lot sizes you order;
  • how often you order; and
  • what freight companies you use.
This information will help us develop a SUMAdvantage program with competitive prices, better services, and lower delivery fees. We need your input to get this right. If you haven't done so already, please take a few minutes and share your expertise with us now.

Funding: Summer Students

Employment and Social Development Canada is accepting applications to 2017 Canada Summer Jobs until January 20, 2017. This initiative provides funding for not-for-profit organizations, public sector employers, and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create summer job opportunities for students aged 15 to 30.
