A Message From Our Head of School
Mrs. Debra Freeburn

Dear Silver Academy Families and Friends,

At The Silver Academy, we have been busily preparing for the holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. At the beginning of the new year, we are given the opportunity to reflect and examine our accomplishments of the previous year and prepare for the challenges, both good and difficult, of the year to come.

We have been taking a look at, and examining, the curriculum at The Silver Academy, and reflecting on ways to enhance our current practices. We are linking the Judaics portion of the curriculum with the General Studies curriculum in order to strengthen student comprehension and build meaning. We are attempting to engage our families, not only to be involved in their child’s learning, but to assist us in setting goals for The Silver Academy, goals that can lead us into the future. At Silver, we are partnering with Melrose Elementary School and their STEM lab to enhance our science curriculum and provide our students with additional experiences. We are working with P.J. Library and the JCC to add events and activities to our already growing list. Keep checking our Facebook and Instagram pages to see what’s happening at Silver and what activities are coming up! And...please don’t hesitate to come in for a visit, call if you have a question, or join us for one of our amazing activities

Warmly,
Debra

Inside the Third Grade Classrooms
General Studies
Mrs. Jessica Wenzelburger
During the months of September and October, the third grade will be immersed in the story  Charlotte’s Web,  by E.B. White.  Charlotte’s Web  focuses on the love and friendship between a young pig and a wise spider. The students have been diving into these themes and relating them to their own lives. They have also been studying various literary elements such as character, setting and plot. Later in the unit we will engage in meaningful activities and projects that help connect the story to the real world even further.
Judaics
Mr. Ellis Rosenberg
The Third grade has been actively involved preparing for the holidays! First, as we prepared for Rosh Hashanah, we discovered there are a few expert shofar blowers in our class. During our Yom Kippur preparations, students learned, in Hebrew, some of the reasons why traditionally many wear white on Yom Kippur. More recently, students have built variations of miniature Sukkot out of Lego blocks while studying for the holiday. Some of the sukkkot represent a kosher sukkah, and some represent a sukkah which is not Kosher. A kosher Sukkah...what does that mean? We don't eat a sukkah! Ask a third grader!

Outside of holiday studies, students continue to learn Chumash. In Chumash, we are following the story of Avram and Sarai (soon to be re-named Avraham and Sarah by Hashem).

The Third Grade hopes you have a meaningful, light fast, and a wonderful Sukkot!
