January 2017 Newsletter
Greetings from the Yoga House & Happy New Year!

Each New Year offers another chance for renewal, self-improvement, and change. It is also a time of reflection, an opportunity to look back and honor the year that we just lived.

Our classes will resume  Tuesday, January 3rd.

We invite you all to start your New Year off on the right step with Melissa's popular Restorative Workshop Sunday, Jan 8th. She has written a wonderful article about the Benefits of Restorative Yoga!

Also, again the announcement for the two new exciting classes we have: Foundations Class (for those with little or no yoga experience) and Kids Yoga!  And the upcoming guest teachings of Jawahar Bangera. Please see all the details below.

As well, check out a delicious recipe, and see the pictures of two of our long standing members tying the knot!

All the best wishes for this New Year to you all!

Benefits of Restorative Yoga by Melissa Perehudoff

Restorative yoga is an excellent way to disconnect from the busy pace of daily life and nurture yourself on a very deep level. When you relax deeply, your muscles release, your blood pressure and stress hormone levels drop and your heart rate, breathing and brain waves slow down.
According to research, regularly quieting your mind and body may help you sleep better and reduce your anxiety.

Additional benefits of a restorative yoga practice include:
1. Releases muscle tension through gentle, prolonged stretching and by using props such as bolsters, blankets and blocks.
2. Provides a mini retreat from the busy pace of daily life and allows you to move at your natural rhythm and tempo.
3. Therapeutic effects for your heart, immune, digestive and hormonal systems.
4. Develops mindfulness and increases awareness of your breath, body, thoughts or emotions that may arise and pass in the present moment.
5. Prepares the mind and body for a seated meditation practice.
6. Helps you to lose weight, particularly subcutaneous fat. Yoga in general is helpful for weight loss because it reduces levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.
7. Gives you permission to relax completely and provides a time & place to rest.
8. Transforms your yoga mat into a sanctuary for self-exploration and contemplation.
9. Invites creativity by fostering a relaxed mind.
10. Reduces anxiety and allows you to experience a wonderful feeling of calm and well-being.

You can experience the benefits of restorative yoga by signing up for our Friday night restorative class or Melissa's restorative workshop on Sunday, January  8th at 9:30 am (details below).
