Message From Our Chair

What a fun and informative luncheon we had! It was a great way to start off our 15th anniversary year.

Speaking to the theme, Women's Health, Wellness and Justice, our speakers gave us facts and figures supporting how needed and timely our grants this year will be. Our members followed their remarks with questions that further illustrated the needs in these three areas. Many thanks to Helen Ryan and Peaches Peterson and their committees for all the work they did to make this luncheon a success.

Plans are moving forward for events this year. Our Holiday Party will be on December 6th. February 20th we will have our Anniversary party at Sea Pines, and in March we will have our Tea where we will look at philanthropy in general. The spring luncheon will be in May.

As always, I encourage you to bring a friend to these events --- or just talk to a friend about joining. Being together with like-minded women serving our community is rewarding and fun.
Thanks for your membership, and enjoy a soon-to-be cooler fall!

Warmest Regards,

Margaret

2018 Grant Theme

We are proud of the fact that the women of WIP have awarded $370,000 in grants as well as creating an endowment fund of over $1,000,000. The grant total includes the $15,000 recently given to Memory Matters in honor of our upcoming 15th anniversary. The members of WIP have chosen the theme for grants to be awarded in 2018 --- "Addressing Women's Health, Wellness and Justice." Letters explaining the criteria will be going out to all nonprofits in November. If you are involved in a group which meets the criteria, please make sure they know about the grant process.

  Anniversary News

The Anniversary Planning Committee is hard at work, planning a fun, festive evening for us on February 20, 2018 at Sea Pines Country Club. We will be celebrating all the contributions that WIP has made to our community over the years. We are going to be using pictures from the past, so if you have any to share, please contact Marcia Collett. We are especially interested in locating a scrapbook that was used for the 10th anniversary event; so if you know where it is, please contact Liz Clist

Fall Luncheon

The recent Fall Luncheon was a big success, with 83 people in attendance. After a delicious lunch, we were treated to two very informative speakers. Hilton Head Island therapist, Dr. Lynn Geiger, referenced the Health & Wellness possibilities for the new grant theme.

She described how Hilton Head Island is not immune to the nationwide opiate problem. Our hospital sees two to three deaths each week, mainly in young men. The concern is that the problem will spread to women and children as well.  Education on all levels is needed. She also talked about how often, thanks to our cell phones, we are becoming more isolated. We need to be more connected to our neighbors for our own mental health.

Local attorney, Elizabeth Mayo, then spoke to the justice portion of the grant theme. She explained how important a "prenup" document was, especially in second or third marriages, when step-children are involved. She discussed how the marriage rate is declining, and that South Carolina is a common law marriage state. After 10 years of living together, couples are considered married, licensed or not. She recommended that unmarried couples have a contract similar to a "prenup" before they buy a house together.
She also noted that doctors, nurses, staff are legally required to report child abuse, but that no such protection is in place for elder care.

2017 Grant Recipient Update:
YMCA of Beaufort County for Senior Shape Up

This grant was to enable 75 senior citizens to join the YMCA Senior Shape Up program, which provides positive health, nutritional, wellness and safe exercise to develop strength and balance in seniors. Thanks to the grant, the YMCA was able to go to Spartanburg for training and order senior-specific equipment. In June they had less than two participants. By October they had 15-20 participants, including one who is 98 years old and asked if another person who was 92 years old could participate.
