FEATURED GROUP:  Glencoe High School Drummers and Bagpipers
Several Glencoe High School students are members of the Scott Pipe Band, thanks to the investment of time and resources by Pipe Major Robin Scott of Edinburgh, Scotland. Pipe Major Scott was a member of the Queen's Own Highlanders and played at Princess Diana's wedding, among many other life adventures, before moving to the U.S. in 2013. After attending a fundraiser at Glencoe High School in September 2016 and being impressed with the drummers who performed that day, he approached the students and asked if they would be interested in learning how to play Scottish drums and be part of his band that he had been assembling and training since the fall of 2015. They accepted and recently showed off their new skills at the Forest Grove Parade of Lights on Dec. 3, 2016. Read more here.
School and District Report Cards and Division 22 Compliance
UPCOMING
EVENTS
JANUARY
By Jan. 15 of each year, Oregon public school districts are required to notify parents and the community about the availability of school and district report cards, as well as about their compliance with Division 22 standards for public education. Individual report cards for each school and for HSD are available on our website under Academics/School and District Report Cards. And, as reported to the Board on Dec. 6, 2016, the District is in compliance with all Division 22 standards - which include areas like delivering career education, assessing essential skills, providing diploma options, etc. - and has approved waivers for materials adoptions in some subject areas. Schools are teaching to current standards in all subject areas, but materials adoptions are currently off-cycle due to several years of consecutive budget cuts.

City of Hillsboro and HSD Announce Safety Improvements
District and City of Hillsboro staff have been working collaboratively to review the circumstances surrounding two accidents involving students at Ladd Acres Elementary School and Brown Middle School in early September 2016 to determine appropriate safety enhancements. Those enhancements, which include adding no parking signs and stenciling, and relocating an existing rapid rectangular flashing beacon, were recently detailed in a press release issued by the City in mid-December.

30-Day Notice for 2016-17 Statewide Tests
State law requires that each Oregon school district notify families of their right to exempt (opt out) their child from the summative English language arts and/or math tests given in the spring, including the Smarter Balanced and Extended Assessments. The state has created a form, available online or at your child's school, that families can use to exempt their child from the testing. In past years, families could only request an exemption for reasons of religion or disability. Now, however, this can be done without stating a reason. Parents/guardians who intend to exempt their child from testing must inform their school office and return a completed opt-out form. Please see our website for additional information.
