October 24, 2017

Open House is coming up on Sunday, Nov. 5 and we're so excited to show prospective families how Carondelet brings out the best in our young women! We're grateful to the students who appear in this year's admissions campaign. Be sure to catch a glimpse of them at Walnut Creek's Broadway Plaza this fall!
Student Clubs Help Alumna Collect Donations for Fire Victims

When Alicia Yandell Hamilton '01 heard that the people affected by the Napa/Sonoma-area fires needed new baby clothes, she reached out to her sisters at Carondelet.

The Jefferson Awards, Students In Action (JA-SIA) Team and the "S" (Soroptimist) Club came to the rescue.  The JA-SIA Team used the rest of their Jefferson Awards Foundation award money from last year's Regional Competition to buy new baby clothes. They also partnered with the "S" Club that helps women and children in need.

Together they donated over 160
items of clothing worth over $1, 500.  All of the donations are going to Birthright of Concord, and they will distribute them to the people in the Napa/Sonoma area.  The JA-SIA Team and the "S" Club loved helping their sister, Alicia.

STEM trip to Switzerland and Germany in March 2019

Students are invited to explore STEM concepts with Mrs. Schooler and Ms. Levesque on a travel program to Germany and Switzerland in the spring of 2019!

Through this trip, students will gain an understanding of how the Alps were formed and see the effects of glaciation on the geography of the Alpine lands and the opportunities this has now provided for travel, leisure and tourism. They will learn about green technology and environmental advances by visiting Vauban-an innovative town that is a model of sustainability. Participants will also hear about the research, technology and production processes involved in the modern automobile industry.

Varsity Finishes First in Division 3 Race at Mt. SAC Invitational

The Carondelet Cross Country team made the 391-mile trip down to Walnut, Calif., to compete at the Mt. SAC Invitational on Friday, Oct. 20. It was the 70th year the meet has occurred and is one of the most nationally renowned meets of the year.

Over 150 teams competed in the 2017 invitational, with a total of 60 races over the course of two days. Carondelet invited its top-16 athletes and had individuals compete in four different races. All races were at the Division 3 level, determined by the size of our school.

Our varsity team closed out the day with an exciting WIN in the Division 3 race. Their total team time was 98:59 (with an average time of  19:45) placed them as the eighth fastest Northern California team (all divisions combined).

The varsity runners were led by a sixth place finish by Clare Schumann '18, as she crossed the finish line of the 2.93-mile race in a time of  18:57. This was Clare's first time breaking 19 minutes, and it led to a 1 minute, 30 second personal record (PR) for the senior.

Clare was followed by Sofia Green '19, who was 10th overall, with a time of 19:17, clocking over a three-minute PR. Kelsey Dempsey '18 was the third Cougar to cross the finish line, placing 20th with a time of 19:51, and a 40 second PR. The top 7 were closed out by Taryn Cunningham '19, 28th overall (20:18), Liza Richards '18, 40th overall (20:36 - 50 second PR), Dana Cross '19, 46th (20:42 - 1:45 PR) and Kasey DeMaria 51st (20:56 - 1:55 PR) overall.  Read more here.

Carondelet Athlete of the Week

Kelsey Hawkins '20
Varsity Tennis

Kelsey won both of her matches in straight sets last week. She beat Foothill  on Tuesday  6-4, 6-4, then  on Thursday  she beat Livermore without dropping a game. Since Kelsey won her challenge match and moved up to line four singles, she has not lost a match. She works hard on improving her game and we are excited to see her hard work paying off in the latter matches of the season. Kelsey and her teammates on the varsity tennis team posted their first win against Foothill.
