Fire Prevention Week Offers Safety Tips from Experts

Katonah-Lewisboro's elementary schools each hosted their local fire department for Fire Prevention Week. 
 
Younger children learned about "stop, drop, and roll," and 911 protocol. Older students tried using a fire extinguisher and even escaping through a window. The visits also conveyed the strong vein of volunteerism in Katonah-Lewisboro.
 

Interdisciplinary Enrichment Brings  Paleolithic Era to Life

Sixth grade social studies curriculum begins with a unit on the first humans in the Eastern Hemisphere. One of the resources that brings the Paleolithic era to life is the Lascaux cave paintings. 

In an interdisciplinary project led by Jean Capuano, middle school art teacher, and all sixth grade social studies teachers, each sixth grade student had the opportunity to create their own cave drawing.   
 
Classroom Strategies for Academic Rigor & Reflection 

John Jay High School is using Facing History and Ourselves to help students to make connections between history and the moral choices they confront in their own lives.
 
Vicky Weiss, an English teacher at JJHS, was one of three KLSD teachers who attended Facing History training this summer. She used one of their tools to go deeper into an exploration of gender stereotypes.

Community Perspectives on Heroin / Opioid Use
October 25, 7 pm, John Jay Middle School Theatre

K-L Coalition hosts a panel discussion featuring K-L parent Maureen Birmingham who will share the story of her daughter's struggle with addiction and, ultimately, her death by overdose in November 2016. Birmingham will be joined by local doctors and law enforcement and prevention professionals to help us understand how misuse of prescription drugs can have a vise-like grip on people of ALL ages, ethnic backgrounds, and socio-economic statuses, and how educating ourselves and being vigilant can turn the tide for good.
