Sermon:   "Justifying Grace: God's Undeserved Gift of Forgiveness "

Scripture Lesson:   Acts 9:13-16, 14:3

This Sunday
This week in worship, we will have our Back to School Blessing for children and adults who are going back to school this fall. If you would like to, please bring your backpack or other school supplies for the blessing during the children's time.

We will also turn to the story of Paul's ministry in Acts, working with both Chapter 9 and Chapter 14. Saul's conversion to Paul on the road to Damascus in Chapter 9 is one of the most remarkable turn-around stories in the Bible. It is a story of someone turning toward God's grace and being justified. It is also a story in which Paul has to come to terms with wrongs he has committed before his conversion. His hands have been responsible for the torture and execution of Christians, yet he turns to God anyway and God finds a way to use even him. Then w e will rejoin Barnabas, now in the company of Saul/Paul, in Iconium and witness the signs and wonders done through them by God's grace.  Read Acts 9:1-19 and Acts 14:1-7 to prepare.

Rev. Laura Baumgartner

In this first month with you, I've learned a lot about you. I've met many of you and had a chance to learn from you what some of your priorities are for the life of our congregation. I appreciate you letting me learn from you and listen to you and grow with you. One of the places that I've started to dig in and get involved is in working with Christian Hampson on the work of the Nominations team. As you may or may not know, Nominations is a role within the United Methodist church polity that includes three main areas.

First, nominations teams help to discern and identify what gifts are present in the people of the congregation and how the people who have those gifts can be empowered to use their gifts to the glory of God. Sometimes, that means helping to connect people to a team that needs their help. Sometimes that means listening to people and their deep dreams for their church and raising those dreams to the awareness of others who share them. Sometimes it means thinking creatively about where God is calling us as a congregation and how we interact with our mission field. Sometimes people think of this role of the nominations team as filling holes on committees and that's important, but it's really much more than that. We are also there to facilitate a conversation about how to serve in the congregation, whether that's on a committee or elsewhere. CLICK HERE for a list of the places that we know of right now where your talents would be valued.   Please take some time to pray about which of these opportunities might be right for you at this time in your faith life. Christian and I are available to answer your questions and/or find the answers to them. They are looking forward to talking with you.

The second main area that nominations teams deal with is to help leaders, once they have been identified, to effectively find resources so they can lead. We think of this as leadership development. We are in communication with the Core Leadership Team in the work toward leadership retreats, resources, and studies. This means that the process of becoming a leader of any kind in the church is not a one way road that leads only to more work. Instead, our hope is that being a church leader is a step into a more faithful and joyful walk with God.

Finally, we understand our third role to be as a clearinghouse for opportunities for laity to develop new skills, new learnings, and new interests, whether or not they are leading a group or serving on a committee, or even attending worship. Expect to see notes from us in the  Thursday emails and the  Sunday bulletins with opportunities around the Bellevue, Seattle, and greater PNW region that will help us all stretch our minds, our hearts, and our hands in new directions as God calls us more and more into relationship with our region. One example that I hope you will consider is the Eco-Faith conference on  November 11, 2017 at Bethany Community Church in Seattle. It will be a day of study, reflection, and discussion around the question, "What does Christ have to do with the environment?" I hope you will come! Tickets are available at  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ecofaith-a-christian-response-to-creation-care-in-cascadia-tickets-36165362573. The fee for the day is $40 for students and $80 for others. Please see me if a scholarship would help you to attend.

So we are here to serve you, as a leader, as laity, or in whatever way you are connected to Aldersgate. We hope you will read the list of places to serve below at this time and call us right away with your ideas. If we don't hear from you, we'll probably be calling you soon. Either way, we look forward to talking with you!

Heartworks Workshops in October
Aldersgate UMC has the opportunity to host a series of four sessions for a small group interested in engaging in an end-of-life planning workshop led by Martha VanDeMark of the Heartwork group. This series of workshops is a powerful way to discuss our own dying process and make our own decisions about what a good death might look like. The sessions will be facilitated discussions of 6-10 people and the cost is $125 per person or $100 per person if there is more than one person from the same family. It's a great experience for couples or children and parents to do together. Anyone who is old enough to have a driver's license is old enough to participate in the group. Please sign up on Sunday's attendance form if you are interested, indicating your preference for the time for the workshop. Contact is Pastor Laura.
Thank You Garnet!
For almost 10 years Garnet Ormsby has served as a regular office volunteer coming to church every Monday morning to help with clerical jobs.  She processes the attendance forms, prepares the children's clipboards, tidies the sanctuary, stuffs envelopes, etc. She has been so faithful and helpful.  We have been truly blessed by her hard work and dedication.  Garnet will retire from her position at the end of September.
Regular Office Help Needed
We are in need of another regular office volunteer since Garnet is retiring from the position at the end of September.  This volunteer is needed on Mondays (preferably) or Tuesdays to help for two hours.  The duties could be split between a couple people and involves:
  1. Log the Sunday headcount, process the attendance forms and tally up the names of people who have signed up for activities
  2. Archive the Sunday bulletin and inserts
  3. Prepare the children's clipboards
  4. Tidy up the sanctuary and narthex, stock prayer cards and offering envelopes, straighten hymnals
  5. Help with occasional tasks like stuffing envelopes
We'd like the volunteer to start in September when Garnet is around to help with training.  If you have questions, or think you might be interested in doing part or all of these duties, please contact Wendi in the church office, [email protected].

Blues for Mister Charlie
Friday, September 15
A play by James Baldwin, performed by the Williams Project will be showing in Seattle September 6-17 and there is interest in gathering a group to carpool and attend together at Franklin High School on Friday September 15. More about the play is below and at http://www.thewilliamsproject.org/. Tickets can be reserved online or by talking with Colleen Olleman or Pastor Laura.

In a small southern town, a white shopkeeper kills a black musician. As the case heads to trial and tensions rise, a Reverend, a journalist, and the shopkeeper's wife struggle to make sense of the truth. Written in 1964 and dedicated to the memory of Baldwin's friend and civil rights activist Medgar Evers, Baldwin's rarely produced masterpiece explores race and violence in the United States with honesty, music, dark humor, and compassion.

After the play, the cast will host a short discussion about the themes introduced by the play. The play is appropriate for high school age and older. All seats are general admission. Donations will be accepted at the door and the Aldersgate Outreach Team will donate for any who attend.
