Meet the Roxbury Board of Education Candidates
The Roxbury public had a chance to come out and meet the board of education candidates last night at Lincoln/Roosevelt School. This event, sponsored by the LRS PTO allowed the four candidates running for three, three-year terms for the Roxbury Board of Education to debate questions from the general public and by the moderator, Michelle Bobrow, from the League of Women Voters of NJ.

This year saw no incumbents seeking re-election for the Roxbury Board of Education. The three board members whose terms expire in December are Patricia Miller, James Monaghan, Jr., and David Ramage.

Newcomers running this year are Joseph A. Bocchino IV of Succasunna, Heather Champagne of Landing, Anne Colucci of Succasunna, and Eric J. Pilkington of Ledgewood.

Click here to read more about these candidates and see where they stand on issues that affect our students and district.

Roxbury High School Celebrates Academic Excellence
Roxbury High School honored academic excellence in its schools Monday night with its annual Academic Excellence Recognition Evening, where students in grades 10 through 12 were presented certificates and awards for achieving a 3.75-grade point average (GPA) or higher in the 2016/2017 school year. Close to 360 students achieved this honor.

In addition to academic achievement, the program also showcased the vocal and musical talents of Kristin Andlauer (Gr 12), Emily Fallivene (Gr 12), Ian Hachey (Gr 11), Austin Kurbansade (Gr 11), and Kathleen Walsh (Gr 12), many of which were also award recipients.

This year, 150 First Year Awards were handed out, 100 to sophomores, 27 to juniors, and 23 to current seniors. Second Year Awards followed for those individuals who have a 3.75 GPA or higher for two consecutive years with 84 juniors and 22 seniors earning this distinction. Third Year Awards were given to 103 seniors for reaching this goal three consecutive years.

Principal Jeff Swanson also recognized four seniors, David Abraham, Kaitlyn Forker, Emily Song, and Sean Tom for earning National Merit Scholarship Awards.

In addition to honoring these current high school students, the Roxbury Board of Education honored two individuals for this year's Distinguished Alumni Award. The Honorable Thomas E Mercure, class of 1961 and Brendan Buckley, class of 1992. Click here to read more about this evening and the distinguished alumni recipients.

Roxbury Board of Education Wrap-Up from October 16th
The Roxbury Board of Education held its October Board of Education meeting on Monday, October 16th in the Lincoln/Roosevelt Auditorium.  Staff members and the public had a chance to hear two presentations at the beginning of the meeting.

The first, presented by four Roxbury High School teachers, Shari Kaine, Maria Rispoli, Deb Burleigh, and Elizabeth Heddy. outlined Roxbury High School's Pathways initiative.  Pathways afford students opportunities to explore pre-professional training and experiences through current curriculum choices while enrolled in high school. Pathways is a new option, not a requirement. It provides Roxbury High School students a structured choice in their educational journey.

The evening's second presentation was a bit more somber as it focused on the district's Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying program. The district's program was covered by Maryann Gibbs, the district HIB coordinator and Human Resources Director. Click here to read more about these presentations and actions on board resolutions.

Roxbury Marching Gaels Take Second Place in Group IV Open Competition and Win The Cadets Award of Excellence at US Bands Yamaha Cup
The Roxbury Marching Gaels took on seven other bands from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania this past weekend in the US Bands Yamaha Cup marching band competition held at MetLife Stadium, where almost 70 bands from the northeast competed.

The Marching Gaels took the field on a warm Saturday afternoon to perform their 2017 show "Ascend" in front of hundreds of spectators in Group IV Open competition, including many who made the trip from Roxbury.

Competing against other New Jersey marching bands such as Bridgewater-Raritan HS, Old Bridge HS, and Shawnee HS, Roxbury took home second place and The Cadets Award of Excellence. The Cadets Award for Excellence is given to select groups whose performance reflects the Cadets' strong tradition of creativity in design and effect and an overall pursuit of excellence.

LRS Beta Tests Google Expeditions
Students in Lincoln/Roosevelt School experienced something new on Friday. LRS beta tested a new augmented reality (AR) app by Google called Google Expeditions.

Google Expeditions is an AR experience instead of the typical virtual reality (VR) one. Virtual reality brings students someplace such as the Museum of Modern Art or Paris. In this case, the Expeditions AR uses Google's AR technology to map the physical classroom and places 3-D objects within that location. Students are able to walk all around the objects, get in close to spot details and step back to see the full picture. AR is when the adventure comes to your current space. Click here to read more about this experience!

Jefferson's Early Act Hears the Call to Help with Hurricane Relief
Jefferson Elementary School and the Early Act Club saw and heard about the devastation in Puerto Rico caused by recent Hurricane Maria and they wanted to help! Third and fourth grade Early Act students decided in one of their meetings to create posters to raise awareness for needed supplies.

In a school-wide and community effort, bedding, cleaning supplies, baby wipes and diapers, miscellaneous household items were collected during the week of October 9th.  The collected supplies filled the back of a pickup truck and were brought over to the Township of Dover. Dover Township coordinated with Governor Christie's Office to ship the supplies to Puerto Rico. Click here to read more about this collection.

Nixon School Transforms Fall Festival into Green Fair
In an effort to expand Nixon Elementary School's Sustainability Initiative, its PTA worked with the school to transform its Fall Festival into a Green Fair with fun green activities planned throughout the day last Friday with special guests and presenters.

Together the volunteers and planners created stations and organized to have local "green" groups present like the Lake Hopatcong Foundation (LHF), Roxbury's Clean Communities, and the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA).

Parent volunteers and these outside representatives helped organize and run the different planned sessions throughout the day. The program included a descriptive, hands-on walking tour of the Husky Garden, recycling question session with the prize wheel with the MUA, book reading in the Media Center with the LHF and NJ Watershed Ambassador, as well as active and creative exercises outdoors.

These outdoor activities included making large recycled mosaics with plastic lids and caps, birdhouse feeders to be hung around the school, as well as relay races and music activities.

Football Game Preview: Roxbury vs. Mount Olive
This week,  Mount Olive (5-1) and  Roxbury (2-4) square off against each other on Friday at 7:00 PM.
Mount Olive can now show off four landslide victories after its game last week. It breezed past Vernon last week with a final score of 47 - 14. Mount Olive is ranked 47th in the state (many places ahead of Vernon), so the decisive victory wasn't entirely unexpected.  Meanwhile, Roxbury lost to Sparta by a decisive 34 - 17 scoreline last week. The team got a solid performance out of senior Michael Roumes (he racked up 90 yards on eight receptions); unfortunately, it just wasn't enough for the win.  The last time they met, Roxbury was the decided 35 - 0 victor. Can Mount Olive avoid another defeat? We'll see on Friday. Click here to see the game preview from MaxPreps.com

A Mission for Roxbury Veterans: Attend VFW Post 2833's Open House
The members of VFW Post 2833 in Kenvil know all about battles; many survived bullets and bombs in defending America.  But now they're fighting a battle that has them stymied: A struggle to keep alive their withering organization.

Tucked away on a quiet cul-de-sac in Kenvil, VFW Post 2833 is on the verge of disappearing due to lack of membership. In what might be a last-ditch effort to avoid that, the post is hosting an open house tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 21). There will be food and drinks and information about veteran benefits.  The goal is to get some young Roxbury veterans to join, said VFW Post 2833 Junior Vice Commander Bob Mederos.  Click here  to read more about this organization from Tap Into Roxbury.

Roxbury Ever Young Seniors Get a Little Freaky for Halloween
It's that time of year again, the time when young people have all the fun by dressing up for Halloween.
Well, that's not true at all.  The members of Roxbury's Ever Young Seniors group prove, year after year, that Halloween is hardly a youth-only celebration. Each October, the group has a lot of fun by holding a Halloween costume party. It's a rite of fall, and some Ever Young members put a lot of work into it.  Photos by Linda McMahon prove that seniors can be silly kids too.

Volunteers Sparkle at Roxbury Litter Clean-up Day
"We had fun!" and "When is the next one?" are just a few of the comments from the volunteers who participated in Roxbury's first annual Litter Clean-Up Day this past Saturday.  The clean-up was a huge success thanks to approximately 85 volunteers, including several high school clubs and scout troops, who took to the streets and cleaned up specific areas of litter and debris throughout town.  Eight locations were assigned including several township parks and highly traveled roadways.  The volunteers collected more than 60 bags of cans, bottles, and trash!  They also collected various other items such as tires, fencing, a computer, brake pads and old traffic cones.

Please keep in mind you don't need to participate in an organized event to get involved in bettering our community. We have many beautification opportunities available such as our Adopt-A-Spot or Adopt-A-Road programs. Or you can simply take a walk through your neighborhood and collect roadway debris. That works too!  We can provide gloves and bags and pick up the items you've collected.

Our Roxbury Pride was definitely the theme for last week. Along with our own community litter clean-up; we were able to coordinate with the state Department of Corrections and the state Department of Transportation to provide a roadway clean-up along Route 46 and Route 10 resulting in 75 bags of trash removed from our community!  For more information, please contact Kellie Ann Keyes, Clean Communities Coordinator at 973-448-2053 or go to  www.roxburynj.us/cleancommunities. The Saga of the Dog Head Sword of Succasunna
You will not want to miss  The Dog Head Sword of Succasunna presentation on Monday, October 23rd at 7:30 PM in the historic First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna at 101 Main Street. The program is sponsored by the Roxbury Township Historical Society, which is grateful to the Church for hosting it.

The owner of the sword, Dr. John Lawrence Brasher, Professor Emeritus at Birmingham Southern College has ancestral ties to Succasunna and the Presbyterian Church, as well. In 1848, when Peter and Ann Watters bought 87 acres of farmland in Succasunna that contained a circa 1729 house, still in use as a charming  residence at the intersection of Unneberg Avenue and Honeyman Drive, they brought with them an old silver-hilted dog head sword, not knowing its exact origin, but intuitively sensing its importance.

By the time Larry, as he prefers to be addressed, was 30 years old, he began in earnest his search for the sword's origin. Its story is multi-faceted, revealing the complexity of the Revolution described in his book,  The Dog Head Sword of Succasunna, as not only a war for independence, but a civil war between patriots and loyalists, relatives and friends. It also brings to light relationships with Trenton silversmiths and Morristown's wealthy Ford family. The book underscores Larry's patriotism and reverence for his ancestry.

Exhibited with the sword will be Larry's Succasunna artifacts and memorabilia from the era of Dr. Elijah Stoddard's service as pastor of the Church from 1865-1913, during which time the Watters were Church congregants.  Refreshments will be served and signed copies of Larry's book will be available.
