No "wiggle room" in Cook Inlet ice

In 1999, the T/V Chesapeake Trader collided with a thick ice floe and cracked a starboard wing tank. Heavy ice ripped the T/V Seabulk Pride from its mooring in 2006, pushing the loaded vessel a half mile north. At low tide, her propeller and bow were out of the water. Less fortunate was the Offshore Supply Vessel Monarch. She sank after being pushed by ice into the Granite Point offshore platform. Read more

Tug Vigilant to be relieved
Millennium Star

Following the grounding of the T/V Seabulk Pride in 2006, Cook Inlet RCAC was instrumental in getting a docking assist tug stationed in Cook Inlet. The first tug assigned to the region was the Tug Protector, which was stationed in Kenai in 2007 and dedicated to Tesoro's KPL operations. The Protector was followed by the 100-foot Valor Class Tug Vigilant in 2008. Soon, a tug with a great track record as a docking assist/offshore towing and ocean rescue vessel, the Tug Millennium Star, will relieve the Tug Vigilant.Read more.

Experts analyze risks

Forty experts with experience in Cook Inlet's wildlife, fisheries, subsistence, oceanography, spill response, shipping, salvage, ports and other areas met in Anchorage October 30 and 31, for a consequence analysis workshop. They were joined by 14 members of the Cook Inlet Risk Assessment advisory panel. The next step is inviting risk reduction options from the public and key stakeholders, which will be done via the project website, local news releases, and individual outreach until early February 2013. The Advisory Panel will compile and rank the risk reduction options through a preliminary survey to prioritize them for consideration. Meeting information is available online.
Is your organization certified?
Cook Inlet RCAC will soon elect a council member to represent Cook Inlet recreational interests. Your recreational group or business can participate in the upcoming election, but first must be certified by the Cook Inlet RCAC. Contact Jerry Rombach to learn how to get certified so that your voice is heard.
