Happy new year, everyone!  I hope you all got to visit with family and friends this holiday season and enjoy this special time.

Our December Section meeting was held at the Sheraton Suites in Cuyahoga Falls, where Bill Zawiski of Ohio EPA delivered an engaging presentation on the proposed removal of the Gorge Dam on the Cuyahoga River.  Bill gave some interesting history on the use of the river and the improvement of the water quality over the years.  He also discussed lessons learned from recent dam removal projects as well as special requirements for sediment removal at the Gorge Dam.  This project has generated a lot of public interest.

We hope you will plan to attend the January Section Meeting which will be a luncheon meeting at Greystone, in downtown Akron.  Our speaker will be Jason Segedy, Director of the City of Akron Department of Planning and Urban Development.  He will be discussing the City of Akron's next phase of downtown redevelopment.  We look forward to his comments.

Looking ahead to February, please plan to attend the annual Engineer's Week banquet.  Details for both Akron and Canton banquets can be found in the newsletter below.

Please watch the newsletter for upcoming announcements.  If you are interested in getting involved in an ASCE committee, we can always use more help.  Just contact any Board member to get started.

Regards,

Kenneth F. Kostura
Akron-Canton Section President

FROM THE STUDENT CHAPTER:

Alumni, Sponsors, and Advisors,

The Concrete Canoe Team will be hosting our 2017 Pour Day on January 14th beginning at 8:30AM. The team has been working hard to prepare for the 2017 Ohio Valley Student Conference. We appreciate your contributions and would like to invite you to see how far we've come.

Every year, students at The University of Akron design, construct, and race a canoe made from lightweight concrete. The team strives to build a lighter, stronger, and faster canoe then the previous years. Students draw from classroom knowledge, co-op experience, and group collaboration in designing a hull, a mold, and a unique concrete mix. The team has seen many successes over the past years and hopes to bring home another victory this year!

I wanted to invite all of you to take part in our big day. We will begin casting the canoe mold at 8:30 AM and will work until it is complete. Lunch will be offered at 11:30AM to all attendees. You are welcome to stop in anytime throughout the day! I look forward to having you attend our event.

Please RSVP by January 10th so we can have enough food prepared.
