Donate Now and Your Gift is Doubled Through a Generous Matching Grant

Click here to find out more about supporting the programs at 317 Main.
317 Main relies on donations from our wonderful community of students, families, and friends.

Your gifts enable us to bring people together, cultivate meaningful connections, and share in the joy of making music.

From our free Noon Tunes performances to collaborations that engage at-risk youth in music, your contributions make it all possible.

Over 100 of you have already made gifts this year, ranging from $25 to $10,000. We are thrilled that an anonymous donor has made a $45,000 challenge grant to support 317 Main this spring.

In order to meet this challenge, we need to raise another $45,000 by June 30th through gifts from new donors and current donors who increase their giving level this year.

317 MAIN INSTRUCTOR ROBIN JELLIS
Travels to Poland & Belgium

317 Main instructor Robin Jellis
317 Main cello instructor Robin Jellis recently travelled to Poland and Belgium to present a collaborative performance piece called "The Thinking Heart: The Life and Loves of Etty Hillesum."

Her creative partners and travel companions were poet Martin Steingesser and performance artist Judy Tierney. Together, they created a piece based on the work of Etty Hillesum, a Dutch Jewish poet who lost her life at Auschwitz in 1943.

The trio was invited to perform their piece at the Etty Hillesum International Congress in Belgium, marking the centennial of the poet's birth.

"I will write these times like faint brush strokes against the great wordlessness of God . . . wield this fountain pen like a hammer, my words so many hammer blows."
- Etty Hillesum, Amsterdam, 1942

Before attending the conference, the trio went to the Polish site of the concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, to retrace Hillesum's steps and to deepen their creative connection to the material. The group was accompanied by Portland photographer, Arthur Fink, who documented the experience.

317 MAIN IN THE COMMUNITY
Five Exciting Partnerships

Click here to learn more about our community partners.
Thanks to the support of our donors and grant funders, 317 Main has been working with five community partners this year to engage students in dynamic, fun, and innovative music-based projects.

Casco Bay High School held their annual songwriting intensive at 317 Main in January. Students spent the week working with 317 Main instructors to write and then perform their own songs in a variety of genres.

Every week, 317 instructor Kate Beever leads a group of young members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine, incorporating music and movement. Their group ends with a performance at One Longfellow Square in Portland on May 6.

A group of 8 students from Wayfinder Schools meet with percussionist Manny Ugilies at 317 Main on Sunday afternoons for a drumming circle.

317 Main faculty have been visiting Yarmouth's Rowe Elementary School periodically to present noontime concerts, instrument demonstrations, and school wide sing-alongs.

This spring, four 317 Main students are collaborating with four young writers from The Telling Room on a special project. The 317 students are writing instrumental pieces to accompany the written work of the Telling Room students. The pieces will be performed at The Telling Room's annual Big Night on May 8 at Hannaford Hall in Portland.

Introducing The CAFE MUSIC MASTERS
A New Performance Opportunity!

"
Just wanted to drop you a line to say THANK YOU for building such great confidence in my daughter as a fiddle player.

To see her perform on the spur of the moment yesterday with a smile on her face and to see her get all that great positive feedback from the audience, it just made me so happy!  (And she was pretty happy about it, too!)"

- The parent of one of our new Music Masters

Visit the 317 Cafe to see our current list of Music Masters. Calling all 317 students! Join the Cafe Music Masters! Simply choose a song to work on with your instructor and when you feel ready, stop by the 317 Cafe and play it for us.

All participating teachers and students are rewarded with a free gift from the Caf basket and have their names added to the 317 Main Music Masters board.

This is a great stepping-stone to help students of any age and ability prepare for performing at a 317 Open Mic or a recital.

To get involved, see Barbara Ann, Chris Moore or Marie Servier for details. We look forward to celebrating your hard work and bountiful talent!
