West Coast Collegiate 7's Championship
|
In a thrilling, closely contested finish, Central Washington defeated defending champion Arizona for the West Coast Collegiate 7s Championship at Sheeran Field on Treasure Island on Sunday, Oct. 22 by a score of 17-15. The Cal Bears took second place, beating Utah Valley University, 29-7. Earlier UC Davis captured the Bowl final over Cal Poly and Western Washington took home the Shield by beating UC Santa Barbara for the second time in two days, 17-0. An enthusiastic crowd was treated to two full days of rugby, with 16 top West Coast collegiate teams under sunny, ideal conditions. Saturday featured four team brackets with winners emerging from the round-robin format into Sunday's Cup Bowl and Shield completion. The Cup Quarter finals saw Cal shut out SDSU 29-0, UCLA falling to Central Washington 24 -21, defending champs Arizona handling USC 34 -0 and Utah Valley University beating ASU 21-14. Jaden Conwright, 18, is a high school graduate and reaching high gear on his way to the biggest stage of his career, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). Conwright will be one of two drivers taking part in the Chris Griffis Memorial Test on the weekend of Oct. 21-22., in eight on-track sessions over the two-day period. Conwright comes into the test with experience under his belt. He competed in the Italian F4 Championship in 2016 and was a part of the Carlin Driver Development Program during the 2017 season.
