Please Join Us to Celebrate the
GW Heart & Vascular Institute's 8th Annual Medical Mission to Honduras
The GW Heart & Vascular Institute supported its Eighth Annual Med
ical Mission to Honduras this September. The GW medical team led by Drs. Cynthia Tracy and Marco Mercader has become key to providing advanced care for patients with heart disease in Honduras, working in partnership with team members from Centro Medico Comayagua Colonial Hospital in Comayagua, Honduras. Our team screens and identifies patients in need of life-saving pace makers and defibrillators. The GW Mission is promoted nationwide through newspaper, radio and TV. This year, more than 200 Hondurans traveled from all 18 regions of the country
to see our medical team in Comayagua.
Dr. Tracy recounts that many p
atients arrive with
overwhelming fatigue and lightheadedness, having
heart rates of only 30 beats per minute. They leave with renewed energy, and in one case the ability to see clearly again.
Since its inception in 2010, the GW medical team has implanted more than 280 pacemakers and defibrillators. This year was a record-breaker, with our team implanting 50 devices, providing more than 200 patient consultations, and performing 100 echocardiograms in just nine days. The Mission operates using donated medical equipment and supplies valued at $700,000.
Your support is critical to continuing our work in Honduras. The Institute is hosting an event to highlight our annual medical mission on Saturday, November 4th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the George
Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum. Join us to hear
Drs. Cynthia Tracy and Marco Mercader present highlights of the Institute's record-bre
aking mission and enjoy an overview of The Textile Museum collection from museum staff. Docent-led private tours will be offered of two new contemporary exhibits:
The Box Project
and
