How the BID Safe Team Helps Keep the Fashion District a Business-Friendly Community
What's the most important thing the LA Fashion District BID Safe Team does? It helps create a safe environment in which business can thrive. Currently there are more than 4,000 businesses operating in the LA Fashion District.
The team is the eyes and ears of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In fact, the Safe Team has assisted LAPD in 55 cases this year leading to 13 arrests. Their bright yellow uniforms let everyone who comes through the district know that someone is paying attention. That visibility is invaluable as it helps deter potential law breakers, provides instant recognizability in case of emergency and offers reassurance for employees and customers.
What does deterring crime and helping Fashion District businesses and visitors look like? In the first half of 2017 the LA Fashion District BID Safe Team performed 7,882 crime prevention location checks - making sure doors are locked, locks aren't broken, etc. - responded to merchant requests for assistance 6,533 times and ensured 1,015 shoppers were able to navigate the 100-block area.

Strategic Problem Solving
19,870. That's the number of times the Safe Team has provided increased patrol this year in response to stakeholder concerns. Each call from stakeholders is individually assessed and strategically addressed. Often times the Safe and Clean teams work together to address recurring issues.
Aggressive behaviors and quality of life issues are addressed on a case by case basis, working with property owners and LAPD. Throughout the day, the team performs welfare checks and calls for medical assistance.
3,118 welfare checks were provided in the first half of the year.
Ensuring those in need receive medical assistance goes beyond contacting paramedics. For example, after a woman was spotted walking undressed through the district, the BID coordinated with LAPD to ensure a quick response when she was spotted again. The woman was then able to receive the appropriate medical assistance. The BID is currently working with LAPD and the Mayor's Office to address the City's response to mental illness and resulting criminal behavior.
