Dybul Elected to National Academy of Medicine
Considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine, Mark Dybul, MD, professor of medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine and faculty co-director of the Center for Global Health and Quality at Georgetown University Medical Center, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. 




Gift of Life Breakfast Honors Patient Navigation Pioneer
Attendees at the 10th Annual Gift of Life Breakfast were treated to a keynote speech by Dr. Harold P. Freeman, MD, the founder and president/CEO of the Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute. 


Dr. Harold P. Freeman will be awarded the Cura Personalis Award at the 10th Annual GUMC Fall Convocation on Thursday, November 16 - learn more about Dr. Freeman here


CBCC Patient Navigators Help Women Overcome Obstacles to Health Care Access
A recent change to the way patients are served at the Capital Breast Care Center (CBCC) has staff members hopeful that they will now be able to reach more women than ever before.

Student Research Day Showcases Wide Breadth of Biomedical Research 
The presentations at the annual Biomedical Graduate Education Student Research Day reflected the students' diverse academic interests and fields of study. 


More than 5 million Syrians have become refugees since 2011, including 2.4 million children. Experts at a recent conference explored the state of the crisis and ways to help Syrian refugee children facing mental health problems.

Intimate partner violence and the ethics of pregnant women's participation in clinical trials were just two of the topics explored at the Gender +  Justice Initiative's Second Annual Faculty Research Colloquium. 
 




Daniel Sulmasy Joins Pontifical Academy for Life
Pope Francis has appointed Daniel Sulmasy, MD, PhD, MACP as an Ordinary Member of the Pontifical Academy for Life. The Pontifical Academy for Life, founded by Pope John Paul II, "exists for the promotion and defense of human life, especially regarding bioethics as it regards Christian morality." Sulmasy, the AndrĂ© Hellegers Professor of Biomedical Ethics, is a member of the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics at GUMC and senior research scholar in Georgetown's Kennedy Institute of Ethics. Other Georgetown members of the Academy include  Kevin FitzGerald, SJ, PhD, (Corresponding Member) and John Keown of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics (Ordinary Member).

The Student Health Center, in partnership with GUWellness and the Office of Faculty and Staff Benefits, will offer influenza immunization clinics for the 2017-2018 season for all Georgetown students, faculty and staff. The vaccinations are free with a valid Georgetown ID (GOCard) and they will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis. The on- and off-campus schedule is available here.

Indoor Tanning Dependency Common in Young Women, Especially in Those With Depression
A survey of young, white women who have used indoor tanning at least once in the past year showed that more than one in five of them have signs of being addicted to the high dose of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from tanning beds. In addition, women with symptoms of depression were three times more likely to meet the criteria for having a tanning dependence.
Georgetown Study to Recruit Washington-area Children to Assess Probiotic to Prevent Diarrhea
A new multimillion dollar study at Georgetown University Medical Center will investigate whether a specific probiotic strain added to yogurt prevents diarrhea in children taking antibiotics for a common illness.
 




Complex Reasons Spur Women to Change STEM Majors, New Georgetown Study Finds

A new study by two Georgetown professors and a consultant provides a more complex view than previous research suggesting women are more likely than men to be deterred by poor grades or the lack of female STEM faculty to provide mentorship.
