Parish Renewal Plan
Vestry/Renewal Team Update:
An integral piece of the Parish Renewal Plan* is item #3, calling for the
adoption of a Mission Statement for St. Brendan's within the first three months of
the Renewal Plan:
Mission Statement
3. Revisit, possibly revise and adopt a Parish Mission Statement that will inform and guide every aspect of parish life;
- Who: the congregation with the leadership of the Vestry
- How: through the work of a drafting group, the Vestry and a parish meeting;
- When: within the first three months of the renewal period;

The Vestry/Renewal Team met on Thursday, August 24th to consider 12 proposed mission statements for St. Brendan's. it was decided to bring forth two for consideration by the Parish's at the September 10 Special Meeting.
A decision was made to also craft a Values Statement, which will also be considered at the September 10th meeting.
The Vestry/Renewal Team will be meeting next Thursday to continue discussion of the five parish ministries.

NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING
Pursuant of Article IV, Section 1, of the Bylaws notice is hereby given by the Vestry that a Special Meeting of the Members of St. Brendan the Navigator shall be held on Sunday, September 10, 2017, at 11:15 a.m. to conduct the following business:
1. Consider the adoption of a Mission Statement and a Values Statement to
accompany the Parish Renewal Plan of St. Brendan the Navigator.

Buildings & Grounds Update
The B&G Committee (Jo Jacob, Skip Greenlaw, Lynne Verhey, Connie Mayo, Stewart Pierson, Ann Tarleton, Rich Paget, absent, and Meg Graham, Chair) met on Tuesday August 22nd at 2:30.
The committee reviewed last year's budget and schedule and noted what had recently been accomplished, which included improvements to new building acoustics and estimates for fixing the balcony and for paving the driveway where it joins the main road. We learned that the paving project was under way, with a plan to grade and pave an area 30 ft deep by 54 ft wide and to remove the granite uprights at the end of the front stairs which block the line of sight, while the balcony project has been deferred owing to cost.
The committee then reviewed a fuller set of projects, some already teed up, and some new requests, and discussed how they should be prioritized.
The larger projects include, in this order of priority:
- Driveway paving and line of sight correction already discussed
- Moving boulders to complete the edging of the side garden
- Bringing in soil and/or compost for both driveway and gardens
- Mold and mildew evaluation and possible remediation in the church and church basement
- Side garden plantings
- Further incremental improvements to the acoustics in both buildings
- New floor coverings in the church proper
- A simple Nantucket porch or deck on the front of the church replacing the two stairways at the two doors
- A columbarium in the side garden by the stairs using the new building wall for small plaques
Other small but important items include:
- Security system training for the vestry and others Widening the steps to the chancel
- Submitting an amended building use proposal to the vestry
- Plans for a clear-up day for the basement
- Small repair (fix-it) days for both buildings.
With regard to two of the remaining larger projects: possible ditching of the church for drainage, and reinforcement of the balcony, it was agreed to experiment with incremental improvements as a first step, and/or to schedule and escrow funds over multi-year periods, while awaiting the results of smaller solutions that might take care of the problems.
There was also discussion of how better to communicate what is happening regarding B&G to the rest of the congregation. In addition to publishing meeting reports in the newsletter, it was agreed to experiment with posting pictures, proposed projects, and estimated costs in the newsletter and on the website, both
to inform members, and to attract anyone who wanted to help fund, or volunteer
for the work.

Seminar on Finding Joy Continues
The Reverend Dr. Edward Dufresne+ will conduct the final group discussion on
the topic, "Finding Joy" at 9am Sunday, September 10th.
The main text for discussion is The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, (Avery, New York, 2016). Topics include: What Is Joy?, Joy and Suffering, Joy Comes with Perspective and Acceptance, Joy in Humility and Humor, The Joy in Forgiveness, Joy and Gratitude, Joy and Generosity, Joy and Compassion, Joy in Being One with the World, and Joy in Being One with God.
The fourth and final session September 10th will cover pp 277-348 - Being One
with the World and pp171-190 - Joy in Being One with the Sacred.

Scripture Notes for The Twelfth Sunday After Pentecost
Today we reach a watershed moment in Jesus ministry as
recounted by Matthew. Jesus asks his disciples who the people and they believe he is.
It is Simon
Peter who replies, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Jesus affirms Peter's
leadership of
the church even though Peter will show lack of certainty in this confession later.
As we continue the story of God's people, last Sunday found them living a privileged
life in Egypt. Several centuries have now passed and today we hear that a new king arose in Egypt"who did not know Joseph." The Hebrew people, the children of Israel, are now slaves and suffering. However, to one of them is born a child who is saved
and adopted, ironically, by the daughter of the Egyptian king. He, Moses, will be the central character in the next several weeks.
We continue to read from the Epistle to the Romans in the second lesson. The final section,which we begin today, deals with the way God's people are to live in
relationship to each other and to the world. Today Paul focuses on the varied
ministries of all members of the Church given to us in baptism.
All our attempts to explain our faith-from Peter's faltering faith to Paul's complex theology - rest upon the encounter we have as a people with God. That encounter
leads us into the symbolic and sacramental expressions of Christian worship and that always leads us into the various ministries to which God has called us. Our most profound experience of faith is this action of Word and Sacrament, of story, song,
meal, and bath, which is at the center of our worship.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses,
especially Wilma Turner, Jan Place, William, Pat Stoneburner, Tony Stoneburner, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Colin MacNaught, Shannon Cormier, Nancy Stearns, Daniel Harriman, Diane, John, Tom, Claudia, Kathy Gray, Hannah Scaife, Marcia Scott, Sen. John McCain, Ann Ottesen, Henry 'Hank' Millon, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Clair. We pray, also, for those who love and care for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.

We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence
of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country,
remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, and Graham.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people, and
our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
the summer chapel congregations of Christ Church Dark Harbor, Isleboro and Our Lady of the Evergreens, Harborside.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
Ruvuma - (Tanzania)
On the Island and Peninsula, we pray for
Reversing Falls Sanctuary, N. Brooksville.
