Lovejoy High School

A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 10 23 17

P arents and Guardians,

This week, LHS will be participating in Red Ribbon Week. Our PALS students have organized activities to encourage students to say "No" to using drugs. It is an important message for our students and I hope you will partner with us by engaging in dialogue with your student about the dangers and potential consequences of drug use, as well as the benefits of making good choices.

I also wanted to highlight a couple of upcoming events. Next Monday, October 30th, we will be hosting a College Admission Rank Discussion at LHS. Admissions officials from UT, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UTD and UNT will be on hand to share important information about their process for making admissions decisions for students. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be hosted in the LHS Main Gym.

Wednesday, November 1st is an Early Release Day for LISD. School will officially end at 1:00 p.m., but all Lovejoy HS students will be dismissed for lunch at 12:15 and are able to leave school at that time. Buses will run their normal routes and will leave LHS shortly after 1:00 p.m.

Sincerely,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

AIM for Success
AIM for Success is presenting information to our students on November 7th with the program entitled "Focus on Success." Today's technology brings a host of opportunities to our young people- opportunities to make a positive difference in the world, and at the same time, opportunities to greatly harm themselves and others. This practical program looks at the rewards and the dangers of technology- including sexting and pornography. A focus on healthy relationships- both in person and online- gives students freedom to reach their dreams and goals.

Lovejoy Letter Campaign
We need your help for an upcoming opportunity to let our teachers and staff know how much our Lovejoy ISD community values them and what an impact each one has on our children! The district provides an extra check for teachers the day before Thanksgiving break. In addition to those checks, again this year we would love to include a hand written letter from Lovejoy ISD families expressing gratitude and appreciation to each teacher and staff on your campus. Letters should simply be a #shortandsweet note of thanks that expresses how much #weloveourteachers.

We would be so grateful if you could write a letter or letter(s) to any teacher or teacher(s)/staff, either current or past, that have been valuable to your child(ren)'s educational experience. Please clearly label the envelope with the staff/teacher's name and LLC (Lovejoy Letter Campaign) and return the letter to the front office by Friday November 10th.

The letter campaign has become such a meaningful tradition. We really appreciate the time and effort your contributions will make again to this year's letter campaign.

Drug Awareness Parent Presentation: October 24
Our Unexpected Journey - Helping Parents Be Prepared
Susa'n Hoemke will be sharing her son Hayden's story and their dark journey through his downward spiral into drug use, addiction and legal issues. Their seemingly perfect family life came to an abrupt end when they found themselves uneducated about - and unprepared for - managing these issues. They lost their sweet, beloved son Hayden in 2014 just before his 23rd birthday. The Hoemke's experience was tragic, and one they wish no parent would have to experience. Sadly, many will and are today.

Mrs. Hoemke will bring some light to this darkness by sharing her experience in hopes of providing some information about how drug abuse can start, what to watch for, and tools to handle these situations, if they do occur.  All parents in the district are encouraged to attend the presentation at Willow Springs Middle School on Tuesday, October 24th at 10:30 AM.

Safe!: November 8
Issues Affecting Today's Teens and How You Can Help
We all want to keep our teens safe.  Join Vanita Halliburton and Dr. Ray Levy on Wednesday, November 8th at 11:30 AM in the Lovejoy ISD Administration Building Board Room to learn how to:
  • Recognize signs of distress in teens
  • Promote brain health
  • Foster resiliency and positive coping skills
  • Know the warning signs of suicidal behavior
  • Find help for a struggling teen
  • Implement protective measures to keep teens SAFE!
Vanita Halliburton is president of the Grant Halliburton Foundation, a non-profit organization that works to raise awareness and understanding of adolescent mental health and suicide prevention.  She speaks from the heart about her son's battle with depression and bipolar disorder and his suicide at the age of 19.

Ray Levy, Ph.D., LSSP is in private practice in Dallas, TX and works extensively with high risk children, children with ADHD and strong-willed behaviors.  He has appeared on numerous radio and television shows discussing various psychological issues.  Dr. Levy travels throughout the country giving workshops and talks on therapy, and child and adolescent issues.

Gold Award: First Aid Donations for ACO
A message from Neha Kapur:

"My name is Neha Kapur. I am a senior at Lovejoy High School and an ambassador in Girl Scouts. I am working on my Gold Award, which is the highest honor in Girl Scouts.

For my service project, No Fear First Aid Is Here, I am creating awareness among kids regarding the importance of first aid in their lives. Knowing what to do when you or someone else is hurt can be very valuable information. I am going to have workshops for children to teach them about first aid, and also to let them practice skills. I feel every child should have at least a basic knowledge of First-Aid.

Additionally, I am holding donation drives at all Lovejoy schools to create first aid kits to donate to Allen Community Outreach (ACO). Items requested for donation are band aids, antiseptic wipes, crepe bandages, cotton balls, gloves, gauze, and any other supplies you would typically find in a first aid kit.  All donations are appreciated and will be accepted through Friday, October 27th. "

Running Over Depression 5K and 1K Fun Run: November 11

This year, the organizers are looking forward to increasing the number of participants and involvement from the Lovejoy Community. The event will be held on Saturday, November 11th. The entry fees are $20 for the 1K and $30 for the 5K, with all proceeds donated to the AFSP. You may register by clicking here .  Register early, as prices increase after November 3rd.

Supporting LHS Students through Senior Project Judging
It is difficult to believe how quickly the school year is flying by. At the high school, this means that some LHS Seniors are nearing the time for their Senior Project Presentations.

Senior Project is an exciting part of every LHS senior's experience as they explore topics of their choice and share what they learn with members of the community. There are different components of the project including creating a proposal, writing an annotated bibliography, and completing an activity. As the culminating event of their Senior Project, students give an 8-10 minute presentation about their experience to a panel of adult volunteer judges. These judges score students on their presentation skills and give them feedback designed to help them in their future pursuits.

We want to extend to you the invitation to share in this experience as a Senior Project Judge. Presentations will take place at Lovejoy High School on November 14th, December 6th, January 18th, February 16th and March 7th. Presentations begin at 6:30 p.m. and should conclude by 8:30 p.m. at the latest. Judges training begins at 5:30 p.m. for those who have never judged Senior Project presentations. Those who judged in past years may arrive at 6 p.m. A light meal is served each night.

Eagle Project:  Hurricane Harvey Relief
A message from Hunter Kight, WSMS 8th grader:

"My name is Hunter Kight, I am an 8th grader at Willow Springs, and I've just started my eagle project. I have chosen to help the Hurricane Harvey victims for my project. Many of the victims did not have flood insurance and this looks to be the most costly natural disaster in U.S. history. The clean-up and rebuild effort will take more than a year. There is a time during disasters like this that charities experience donor fatigue. This is where donations drop to their lowest. Through my project I am trying to reduce donor fatigue, by collecting basic essential items. I have partnered with the Salvation Army to collect supplies like canned goods, baby food/formula, hygiene items, diapers and cases of water. Large donation boxes are located at each school to collect these items. I will leave these boxes out until November 3, 2017. Please consider supporting this effort by filling the boxes and helping the victims."
