The Rev'd Fleming Rutledge Author of The Crucifixion (Winner of the 2016 Book of the Year Award, Christianity Today) and many sermon collections, the Rev'd Fleming Rutledge has long been among the most prominent preachers and teachers in the mainline churches. Her collection of sermons on the Advent season, The Once and Future Season, is forthcoming from Eerdmans.
Dr. Joseph Mangina Professor of Systematic Theology at the University of Toronto, Dr. Mangina is editor of the theological journal Pro Ecclesia and author of a number of volumes, including the Brazos theological commentary on the book of Revelation and Karl Barth: Theologian of Christian Witness (WJK, 2004).

Advent is often swallowed up into the forced cheer of "the Christmas season," but it has a theological character all its own, one of eschatological hope and preparation for the second coming of Christ the king, mighty to deliver and save even and especially when we find ourselves trapped in "the bottom of the night." As we pray in the collect for the Third Sunday in Advent: "Stir up your power, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen."
In this study day, come and walk through the lectionary texts for the four Sundays in Advent with two of our church's most prominent preachers and teachers, the Rev'd Fleming Rutledge and Dr. Joseph Mangina. Our study day leaders will expound the biblical texts, reflect on their theological import, explore the rich hymnody and liturgy of the season, and spend time in conversation with us as we prepare for the advent of our Lord. Adviento, en ocasiones es una época absorbida por las fuerzas que aclaman la "época Navideña," sin embargo, cuenta con tener su propio carácter teológico, uno de esperanza escatológica y de preparación para la segunda venida de Cristo Rey, aún debe ser entregado y salvado, especialmente cuando nos encontramos atrapados en "hasta que termine la noche." Como oramos en la colecta para el tercer domingo de Adviento: "Suscita tu poder, oh Señor, y con gran potencia ven a nosotros; ya que estamos impedidos penosamente por nuestros pecados, haz que tu abundante gracia y misericordia nos ayuden y libren prontamente; por Jesucristo nuestro Señor, a quien contigo y el Espíritu Santo, sea el honor y la gloria, ahora y por siempre. Amén."
