FASHION TIPS

DO I LOOK FAT IN THIS?
is the question I get the most often from clients.

Everyone wants to look their best -- no matter their figure type. The key lies in minimizing your figure flaws and maximizing your assets. Knowing what works for you is the most important aspect of looking thinner.

One service I provide can give you the answers in a 50-page, illustrated fashion manual customized for you, detailing the styles of necklines, jackets, dresses, slacks and other attire that best suit your individual proportions. The silhouette analysis also includes a face shape analysis, giving you the tools to create your own best personal style from head to toe, including flattering hairstyles and eye wear. Let me know if you might like to schedule a silhouette analysis. The cost for my time, the face shape analysis and the manual is $150 and takes about 45 minutes to complete.

Some general guidelines for looking thinner might include the following:
  • Darker clothing is slenderizing and it doesn't have to be in black. Black, dark brown, navy blue, dark green and burgundy tones all contribute to a slimmer, sleeker look. Why? Dark colors absorb light and recede into the background rather than reflect light and popping out. For hiding lumps and heavy areas, darker colors work best.
  • Dress all in one color or in similar shades. Monochromatic dressing creates a strong, unbroken vertical line which elongates the body, making you look taller and slimmer. Wherever there is a change in color, the eye will be drawn, so avoid strong color changes on the heavier portions of your body,
  • Draw attention away from trouble areas. Use lighter and brighter colors to draw the eye away from heavy areas. For instance, large hips -- wear brighter or lighter colors on top, darker colors on the bottom. Use jewelry and scarves to direct the eye to the face and away from the hips. Or consider a large, eye-catching pin on or near your shoulders.
  • Avoid shiny or bulky fabrics and too much detailing worn over areas of your greatest weight. Do not wear ruffles anywhere you are heavy. Fabrics such as heavy knits, corduroys, bulky knit sweaters and knobby tweeds all add weight.
  • Watch out for big prints. They confuse the eye, which tends to travel all over, absorbing the print and making you look larger than you really are.
  • Body-shaping pantyhose can smooth out "lumps and bumps" on your lower body. And a spandex-blend camisole worn over or instead of a bra can minimize back bulges.
  • Sagging breasts can make you look unnecessarily heavy. Wear a bra that lifts you and watch the pounds come off.
  • Watch the areas where your accessories hit or your skirt or pants fall. For instance, do not wear a shoulder strap handle at a length that makes the bag bounce on any heavy part of your body-- particularly the hip or derriere. And always hang your skirt or pant at the most flattering part of your leg. Look at yourself in the mirror and turn sideways until you find that flattering point.
  • Buy clothing that fits. Clothes that are baggy or tight will make you look bigger. Buy clothes for the largest part of your body. For instance, if you have thick thighs and a small waist buy pants that fit the legs comfortably and pair them with a belt or have the waist tailored to fit. Keep the fabrics soft and drapey but not clingy.
  • Pay attention to hair and makeup. If you lack confidence about your body, consider attracting attention to your face. Play up your features such as pretty eyes, full lips, high cheekbones or a nice nose, with the right makeup. A statement earring can further anchor attention near your face. A good haircut is also key.
  • Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if I can help you in any way.

Some Facts About "Graying"

  • Graying is a natural phenomenon that comes with age as follicles at the base of the hair shaft lose melanin.
  • Graying is primarily genetically determined. We most often see gray when our parents and grandparents did.
  • Poor nutrition. Vitamin B and iron deficiency, thyroid problems, albinism, smoking and other environmental toxins may also contribute to graying.
  • Caucasians tend to start graying earlier (in their 30s) than Asians (late 30s) and Afro-Americans (mid-40s).
  • While, on average, most people begin to gray between the ages of 30 and 40, white hair can appear at any time. People who go gray before 40 are considered prematurely gray.
