BMSA's Safety First!
August 2017
Disasters Don't Plan Ahead. You Can.

September is National Preparedness Month, and everyone can take action to prepare for disasters. Each week in September, there will be a new focus.

During week one, the emphasis is on making an emergency plan for your family, friends or household. Included in planning, your family should answer questions like:
  • How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?
  • What is my shelter plan?
  • What is my evacuation route?
  • What is my family/household communication plan?

CERT Classes Available Near You

Emergency Management Agencies throughout the country are offering Community Emergency Response Team training classes. Registration is generally required, but the classes are free.

Classes train participants in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT volunteers are trained to respond safely, responsibly and effectively to emergency situations, but they can also support their communities during non-emergency events, as well. There are more than 2,700 local CERT programs nationwide, with more than 600,000 individuals trained since CERT became a national program in 1993.

In today's business environment, these costs can be the difference between operating in the black and running in the red.

OSHA's '$afety Pays' Program Helps Assess Impact of Injuries

OSHA's "$afety Pays" program can help employers assess the impact of occupational injuries and illnesses on their profitability.

This program uses a company's profit margin, the average costs of an injury or illness, and an indirect cost multiplier to project the amount of sales a company would need to cover those costs.

The program is a tool to raise awareness of how occupational injuries and illnesses can impact a company's profitability, not to provide a detailed analysis of a particular company's occupational injury and illness costs. Read more.
