January, 1 2017

As 2016 races to a close I thought it was fitting to review some of the U.S.S. Wainwright Veteran's Association activities that happened this year. We are very lucky to have a thriving and growing association. The association would not exist without your participation and membership.

2016 started with our U.S.S. Wainwright Mobile Museum making a trip to Melbourne, Florida for the largest Vietnam Veteran's reunion in the United States. There were many Army displays including helicopters, jeeps, trucks, campsites, and memorials. Our museum was the only Navy display at the reunion. Over 400 people came through the museum and learned about the U.S.S. Wainwright's activities in service to our country.

In May the mobile museum went to Washington D.C. for the Rolling Thunder Demonstration. Our museum was escorted from Rock Hill, South Carolina to Washington D.C. by the Rock Hill Chapter of Rolling Thunder. It was quite a sight to see as our museum was escorted by a motorcycle procession from South Carolina to Washington D.C. Many people stopped by to see our museum and once again the story of the U.S.S. Wainwright was shared.

In July the mobile museum was set up at American Legion Post 34 in Rock Hill, South Carolina for Family Day. The museum was visited by a large number of people. After Family Day the mobile museum went to Charleston, South Carolina for our U.S.S. Wainwright Reunion.
The Reunion was a huge success with over one hundred shipmates attending. It was great to spend time together and tell some sea stories. There was plenty to do and some excellent tours. A fun time was had by all.

In August the mobile museum appeared in the Old Soldiers Parade in Alpharetta, Georgia. The museum has always been well received and to see the appreciation of the crowds never grows old.

In November the mobile museum made appearances in three Veterans Day Parades. It appeared in Charlotte, North Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina, and in Columbia, South Carolina. The museum was well received and it was fun to meet with shipmates at the parades.

In December Rod Shafer and his wife Julie put together a terrific cruise book chronicling the history of the U.S.S. Wainwright and the history of our association. It is a great read and shows many aspects of what our association is about. If you didn't pick one up there are a few available in the ships store.

As we enter the New Year our association is doing well. We ask that you participate in association activities as you can and help us to continue to grow. Your dues and participation make us stronger. As we head into 2017 we look forward to what new adventures the new year brings.

Happy New Year to you and your families from the U.S.S. Wainwright Veterans Association.

The USS Wainwright Veterans Association is a 501(c) 3 non-profit association of men who served aboard any of the three USS Wainwright ships. Our association exists to keep alive the memory of all vessels named Wainwright. With our mobile museum we educate the public about what our sailors have accomplished, and or completed while onboard any of the ship's named Wainwright. This mobile museum also promotes the United States Navy and Americanism, but we cannot do this without your support. We need your donations to support cost of operating this one of a kind teaching tool. Your donations are 100% tax deductible so please be generous and help us keep our museum going. Donations can be made on our web site http://www.usswainwright.org/donate/
